Quarter horses, then Paints, then Grades.

Paints, Quarter horses, Appaloosas . Gaited breeds like Tennessee Walkers and Rocky Mtn Horses are pretty popular around here too. The Amish around here have Belgians, Haflingers and Standardbreds

QHs are very popular as well as gaited breeds. Lots of trail riding areas here, so those breeds and grades are popular for trails.

We also, though, have several Foxhunt Clubs in the area and eventing is rather popular here (we live between the Virginia Horse Center and Charlottesville/Middleburg area) , so TBs, Warmbloods, SportHorses, and draft crosses are quite common. One of my best friends has two Cleveland Bays.

wow! Those are pretty rare. I woman I know in MN has an Akhal-Teke/Arab/Saddlebred cross. Quite a pretty mare.

A woman around here has a Gotland pony for her granddaughter, picked it up cheap at an auction and got genetic testing done. Found out it was a Gotland :)

There is an Akhal-Teke breeding farm just down the road from me. Beautiful horses.

Around here, it's almost a case of "well, what block do you live on?":D There are lots of people that only trail ride, so anything sturdy and sensible works for them. There are the Western show people, where it isn't only breed but bloodline that counts with them. We have a lot of English riders, so a lot of pastures sport TB's and Warmblood types. There is an up-and-coming Arabian breeder practically at my back door. And my personal favorites, minis ( :love ) are big around here, too!

Lots of variety locally. Western type are the most common, all the breeds have a presence. Not much for Arabs close by, but some a few miles away. Percheron drafts down the road, used in a carriage rental business. Some gaited horses on the corner for trail riders.

We now have Cleveland Bay partbreds, use them for all our horse activities, with Driving the main use. Daughter does 4-H and High School Equestrian team and sometimes we go trail riding, camping out with them. They have nice brains, extremely athletic. We haved owned all the Clevelands I know about in Michigan, two got sold as riding horses to other folks. Just not many CB horses around! They are slow to mature, mentally and physically, so lots of folks can't wait for them to grow up. People always come up to ask what they are at competitions, notice the "not dainty" heads, size of hooves and bone. Not what the folks are used to seeing for horses, though they do like their looks.

Oddly enough another rare breed, pure Hackney Horse lives about 1/4 mile away. There might be a couple more in the state, but I don't know them. He is a breeding stallion, used to cover Arab mares for the Halfbred Arab English Pleasure horses. They want the knee action on them. Have never met them in person, read an article about the horse and their breeding program in the local intrest news.

This whole area is big in horses, you can find most breeds if you look some. Not the rarest ones like ours, but less common ones. Fresians, all the pony breeds, Mustangs, several gaited type horses, the TBs and Standardbreds, all common Draft breeds, Morgans.

I have to say the top 3 uses here are Ranch/cattle work, 3 day event and long distance or back country riding. So for breeds, well honestly Grade and crosses rule!

Few of the working ranches are running pure horses, but most appear Quarter or heavy TB type. Roping and reining horses might have papers.

Eventing are various Warmbloods, TB and crosses of.

Distance are Arabs and crosses of. Lots of Morgan/Arab breeders in the area, and Arab/Paint is common too. Most of those have half papers.

Uncommon in this area is gaited anything. I wish, I'd love to know more about them and get out there and experience some of them. :( Glad I got the TWH mare when I did, but want to find out more.
