Requirements:
- Good feed utilization
- Decent sized litters
- High dressed weight

In the future I plan on raising meat for my dogs (they eat raw) If I were to base half of their meals on rabbit, I will need to produce 1000 pounds a year. I do also plan on raising goat, chicken, beef and possibly pork, but those won't be solely for the dogs like the rabbits will. Also, what do you think is a realistic number of does to produce this amount (without over-breeding) with the suggested breed?

No reason for the rabbits to be just for the dogs, the meat is great, very lean and yummy. We raise Silver Fox for meat (JUST for US), they are a great breed large and calm and good mothers. My does have nice size litters, like 9 - 10 and are great mothers.

There are alot of great meat breeds but the most common are the New Zealands they are easier to find in any area so are normally much cheaper

I am still working on starting a meat rabbit herd years ago we raised all the Lop eared breeds and sold them for pets and show we bred does 3 times a year my current meat rabbit doe had 8 her first time and 10 her second I think that is pretty average for NZ's

Any meat rabbit breed will work, but you have to get them from real meat lines or it's just a rabbit. When it comes to choosing the breed to raise it basically comes down to what appeals to you.

Cinnamons -weighing 8-11 lbs.

California -Weighing 8-10 1/2 lbs.

American Chinchilla -Weighting 9-12 lbs.

Creme D'Argents -Weighing 8-11 lbs.

Blanc d'Hotot-Weighing 8 -11 lbs.

New Zealand -Weighing 9-12 lbs.

Palomino -Weighing 8-11 lbs.

Rex -Weighing 8-9 lbs.

Sables -Weighing 8-10 lbs.

Satins -Weighing 9-10 lbs.

Silver fox -Weighing 9-12 lbs.

French Angora -Weighing 7-10 lbs.

American Blue and White, Florida Whites, Standard Rex

I have tried it prepared many different ways and I just don't like it. The dogs, however, go crazy for it and I love knowing where their food comes from.

So with the NZ Whites, at what age do I process? I've owned pet rabbits in the past, but never meaties.

Im a rookie just getting started but from my research if fed the best food it can be as early as 6-8 weeks but is never more than 12 wks. Im trying to figure out when to seperate from mom and the details myself....
