Wow you guys are giving me panic attacks about all the stuff I don't have :hide

All of these things have been accumulated over the years.

I use to say "If I have to have an entire cabinet for goat meds then I don't need goats" and other sorts of things.

Truth is often we end up with stuff for a reason.
When our one goat had listeria that brought in a variety of things. When we brought in goats from other farms we had to be on the ready and we always have the vet check every new goat that comes in.

Many things have accumulated by seeing what others have gone through. Always better to be prepared than stuck on a late night Sunday with no options. My vets are great and I can call anytime day/night/middle of the night. With my background in vet med I can usually do what is necessary til they get there.

Truth is though, other than minor stuff I don't do anything until I get hold of my vet. I like my vets and respect them.

Geeze - easier for me to post what I don't have, lol. I have some version or another of most of the stuff others have listed, but looking at the lists helped me remember that I need to update some things. My epinephrine has expired - need to order more. I just got a Jeffers order last week and forgot to get it - again! But, I did get new castration bands and new nipples (nobody say a thing, lol)

I don't have a suture kit - but I do have a staple kit! Don't really wanna use it - but how cool is it! I think it might be faster to staple a cut goat than to try to stitch one... they really don't want to stand still! Used superglue once - worked great - but sure burned the poor goat. I'd use it again though if I didn't have anything else.

Oh, and one of the most important things that I've had to use in an emergency - more than once - BOLT CUTTERS!

SBC is correct -- a GOOD relationship with your vet is a must. I've spent 25 yrs with mine and we both respect one another. A phone call can safe a life.

I keep probably all mentioned and then some. LOL. Truthfully, you don't need it all most of the time but, when you do..you do! I keep things like body slings and pully lifts in the barn -- just in case --oxygen tanks, ambu bag, normally have sedatives on hand, SMZ tabs (Bactrim/Tribrissen brand names), Pen G, Amoxicillin. Kidding can bring it's own set of needs.

You should have some pulls for the kids. Normally not needed but, if one is malpositioned, it helps to be able to hook onto a leg and hold in place (like a third hand). Also, headlights to have light without having to hold the light. If in trouble you will need both hands -- and more. Keep some clean towels and wipes available. Many uses there. They were always in the plastic tote for foaling season.

Almost makes you wonder why you have them, right? :idunno

I don't have a ton of things but I keep the valbazen, safeguard, syringes and needles, vit b and penicillan on hand I have others but those are my main ones. We have several vets I would trust and have my herd on file. They've run fecals for me. My next step is to get a microscope for my own use.

My kit pales compared to what others have. I have local stores that carry most of it and a vet or 2 or 3 if I need them, including home phone number. I also have MANY goatie friends that I can borrow from in a pinch.

-thermometer
-Vasoline
-various antibiotics
-cd ANTITOXIN
-epinephrine (during CDT vaccine season for new kids)
-needles
-syringes
-vet wrap
-blood stop powder
-gauze
- Pepto Bismol
-Magna Lax
-Beer (for the goats, not me)
-Banamine
-IV setup with ringers but probably outdated.
-60cc syringe
-CMT kit
-Today mastitis treatment (leftover. probably old)
-red top tubes
-bolusing gun
-banding tool and bands
-tattoo kit
-teat tape
-Vitamin B complex
-hoof trimmers

during kidding season I will have:
-phone number of my best friend on speed dial
-calcium gluconate
-CMPK
-towels
-puppy pee pads
-iodine
-OB lube
-CDT vaccine
-Baycox or Di-methox (this year changing to Corid in the milk if I pull kids)

Pretty much everything else I buy as needed. That would be vaccines mostly. I have never used Nutri-drench, Molasses, goat coat, heat lamp, bulb syringe, and probiotics only once. I don't wear gloves when I pull kids, they are too slippery. I have never weighed a kid except for cocci treatment time and then I use the bathroom scales. I have never weighed an adult goat, but that may change now that I have minis and no idea what they weigh. I don't do my own fecals, I have a friend that does them for me; parasites are not an issue at my farm, but I still watch them just in case. I guess I am a minimalist. KISS is my motto.

Two of my vets are like family so no they do not charge for phone calls however I am very respectful of their time.
The only time I have ever called in the middle of the night was when Callie got ill after having her pups.

I am also very good about taking an animal in. I value my vets.
They are a blessing to me.
