You don't have to own a Pig to have a favorite breed or cross.

I like the Hereford, Tamworth, GOS and Kune Kune.
Hereford pretty much just cause I like the color and I think they look comical and they kinda do. I love my BlackWorth, which is a Large Black cross with a Tamworth. He is black but looks alot like a Tam but a little longer. He is a sweety for a boar, which is good but he is young. I've already used him and he did well.

My favorite breed is the duroc. I don't have the facilities for large hogs, so I ended up with a potbelly LOL But I would have a duroc in a hearbeat if I could. My grandfather used to tell me stories about the "red pigs" they used to have on their farm when he was a boy, so naturally I always loved the red pigs, then reading on them, the Duroc just seems like a nice all-around hog. Of course, this is all based on limited experience, just what I fancy.

Yes, the Duroc is a good pig breed.

Large Blacks without any hesitation. The sows are usually great mothers & both the sows and boars are extremely docile. Yes these pigs are large but they are total sweethearts. They seem to be able to adapt to all temperatures, hot or cold and the meat is delicious. Most times they breed back in a timely manner which is another great asset.

Their only downside, if you can call it that & is certainly not a negative for us, is that they do grow slower because they are a heritage breed so they take longer to feed out. BUT they thrive on pasture & so do not need copious amounts of grain to grow. Vet bills are non-existent.

Would not have any other pig breed here on the farm & yes, we have raised other breeds in the past.

I'm finding my GOS crosses to be great mothers and their piglets grow rather fast compared to my Herfords.

I'm a little late to the party, but my dad and uncle use to raise these Breeds: Duroc, Tamworth, Hampshire, and Yorkshire.
I might have missed some.. Its been almost 13 years since they've raised and breed pigs.
