I'm having a had time finding a vet nearby here. So I think I might have to stick with the ibuprofen until I do.

When using it during castration you only need to give one dose.

If you use it for any other purpose do not give for more than 48 hours or you could cause liver damage.

I was thinking about it (am up with the baby anyway), and thought that next time I band, I may give the ibuprofen about 45 minutes BEFORE I band. I'm hoping that by the time its gets uncomfortable, the meds will have already kicked in. I did that when my boys got their baby shots, and it did better.

What do you think Elevan?

(I'm not trying to hijack a thread here, I just thought it may be useful info for the OP)

Yep, pain medication actually works best when it is administered a little BEFORE pain firmly sets in. So allowing the medication a chance to work (even 30 minutes) before banding or castrating in another fashion would be better than giving it after.

Wish I could get my hands on one of those.

Do you think is causes the kids less distress? I'd really rather not have to band them. Wouldn't be the worries about flies and infection too.

I don't know if one is really better then the other, I've never used anything but the clamp typ tool. To me it's kind of like snapping your finger off vs. putting a rubber band on it and letting it rot off. Mine walked funny that night, but where fine the next day. I looked at the ways it could be done, and I was more okay with this way.

Glad I ran across this, as we are wethering 6 of ours. I talked to my vets vet tech, as she raises Boer goats and wethers for 4H. She told me to use the castrating bander and green bands, and she told me after 2 weeks to cut off the dried testicle bag right below the band. I waited the 2 weeks and then when it came time to cut them off with a sharp pair of scissors, I chickened out. I was scared it would hurt him or he would start bleeding a lot. His bag is really dried up, but still. I thought they just fell off after a while. Any one heard of this? Or how do you do it? Do you cut it off, or just let it fall off?

Yes, our vet recommends that we do this at 2 weeks after banding. We just never get around to it, We always vaccinate for tetnus and we normally don't band in the summer time, since our kids are born in the winter. But It is a good idea to help keep flies and dirt from gathering around and under the band.
