That's experience. ;)

We don't use the tapes much either but, after all these years we've gained an eye too.

It would be a great idea for newbies to get a tape for their breed and tape the babies as they grow. I am sure you can get growth charts for various breeds from web sites or the local extension office. It's really hard to learn proper growth rates/weights when you only have a critter or two and you don't want the growing ones to be too fat.
For instance, we learned from experience and taping weights that we should never feed grain during spring grass flush. Our girls got too fat!

I have a question. Our family lives in North Texas. What breed of cows would be best for us for meat production? We have about 14 acres available to us for grazing, with a pond, and want to start raising our own beef. We're also interested in breeding our own replacement cattle. Thanks so much for your answers. Love the site.

Thanks for the compliment.

I'm sure wynedot will be on and answer the specific TX questions but, I would think most any breed would work. The long haired breeds may need more care with your heat, I'm not sure.

With 14 acres, if the grass is good and grows well, you should be able to pasture up to 14 head-although if it were me I would figure 12 tops to be safe. Any more or if the grass isn't good or grows slow, you will have to supplement feed hay more is all.

Good fences (5-strand barbed wire w/metal posts). All fairly new, nice and tight, no rust, etc.

Water, yes, and also have a small pond.

No barn, not even a lean-to shelter for now, but we can build one.

No holding lot, but that can be arranged as well, no problem.

One more question ... while we could get to them every day, the land is a far piece from us. If we had just 3 steers on 14 acres, with water available and plenty of grass for them, how often should (or would) we need to check in on them? Many thanks ...
