I have a Momma cow that has some swelling on the left rump cheek. It is not tender or mushy soft. Feels the same as the other side. It is just slightly swollen. Would anyone have an idea as to why this may be. The only thing I can think of is she was stung by something or kicked. I dont see any physical injury and she is not tender. She is eating fine and no other changes. I added pics for reference. Any help is appreciated

Looking, see no obvious damage. My thoughts -- bug bite, scratched to hard on post, barn or?, lastly you have a 1.5 y/o steer with her. Could be she's cycling and he tried to mount. Yes, occasionally a steer will, even another cow on occasion. Hormones.

If any of those, soft tissue damage and it will subside in a few days. Just a guess as to what/how.

Sorry, saw your post, had about 5 hours between getting home last night and going to another farm to work this morning...

With no obvious wound or anything.... I agree with @Mini Horses . Could have gotten a splinter from something or poked a spot that has slowly just formed a pocket and might be puss filled... probably just some soft tissue damage. If it is some sort of infection, it will eventually come to a head and burst and drain... see it occasionally on dairy cows that constantly rub a spot, say on a hip or something, constantly hitting the same spot as they lay down in a stall or something, and it gets a bruise that eventually just gets an infection that will burst open.
Also agree on the possibility of the steer riding her and just bruising it... it is really hard to "know" ....
If she is eating and acting normal, don't sweat it... not being near her head or eyes, pretty much rules out "cancer eye" or a "lump jaw" type situation...
If it is not hurting her, and she does not react to pushing on it or anything, just keep an eye on it... if it should be a localized type infection... once it opens up, and she will let you, squeeze anything out you can, wash out if possible, and keep it open so it will drain and dry up...
A kick could cause it to swell some also... likely you will never know what caused it. If there is a foreign body in there, it will fester and burst and drain and be done... Like a splinter in your finger that suddenly swells up, gets a little pus pocket around it and then one day you can use a needle, open a little hole, and it will all squeeze out and the splinter comes out, and then it will just dry up. A temperature, or off feed or different behavior would be cause to be concerned...
Is she bred back? Is the steer going in the freezer???

And Welcome to BYH..... glad to see a "cow person"....

Thank you for the response. You just confirmed what I was thinking it might be. She is not bred yet. Would like to get her bred again. Yes the steer is for freezer. I have to wait until there is room in freezer. I had to put down my breeder boar end of last year due to major spine injury. I had him butchered and now the freezer is full. I will need to buy another freezer for the steer before I can have him butchered. The boar was over 620 pounds and took the rest of the freezer space. Thank you for answering. It is nice to know that I have a place to acquire knowledge from and the folks don't talk down to ya. Other groups I was in were not as nice. I love what I do on my small farm, but I am always learning.

You are welcome. As you know farming/homesteading can throw some curves.... and not always nice ones like the injury to your boar.
Can you go to your name, top right, down to account details, and down to location, and put in a state or general area... you can see what most of us have... as it will show up on your avatar every time you post, and then we can tailor responses to your area... things in Va here, are different than in Tx or Ca.... especially with feeds/hay etc.. And some things never change....

edit:
lol, I have to retract what I wrote! (I was complaining about not being able to see people’s locations in portrait mode on my phone anymore.) After I posted it and went to read another thread, I realized that I have always had to click on the username in order to see the location, and it is still there where it always was.

But I will add, it sure is nice when people have their general location. It’s kind of like a pneumonic device for me to remember who is who. I know everybody based on the state they are in and whether they are on the left, middle or right of the US. 🤭
