I visited a friend over the weekend and saw their yaks. They don't really belong here, but it was so interesting I thought I would share.

Apparently there is a wild type yak that gets very big and then the domestic variety that stays much smaller and comes in a wide range of colors. The breed is being touted as very heathly meat that requires almost no food to grow.

These two are quite small. They are one year old and about 450 to 500 lbs. They seem docile and have tails just like horses.

Have a look:

Anyone else have or know of anyone with yaks?

The wild types are all the same color but the domestic ones are much more colorful. The male in the background is called a royal, with more white and the cow--who is all black with white socks--is called trim.

I also thought they were very cute, but all youngsters are.

There are a few yak breeders around. I'm hoping to get my herd started in the spring next year.
