Young Lamb with Strange Hooves

Thanks BrownSheep, I've heard about the vaccine, but soremouth hasn't really been much of a problem for us so far. After some research, it looks like the main problem with this lamb was the ewe not producing enough milk for twins, and so this lamb wasn't getting proper nutrition. Of course, the soremouth made the whole thing worse. Now that I know what it is, I know not to scrape of the scabs with my bare hands :rolleyes:

And thanks goatgurl, I've been looking for people with similar experiences but so far I think you're the only one! I've always heard that too much protein can accelerate hoof growth, but it's good to know that illness and nutrition can alter hoof growth as well.

The problem with vaccinating for sore mouth is that is a virus with many different strains. You can vaccinate your flock against several strains, but they can still get sore mouth if a new strain is introduced. Not worth the time and money IMO.

I definitely agree, I feel that it's not worth it to vaccinate for soremouth. CDT yes, but that's about it.

agree with mysunwolf, i don't vaccinate for soremouth either. i definitely do for cdt though.
