Interesting. Though neither Aspen or Remy can have OFA health certification because they are too young. My breed is also considered medium size.
Have you looked at color genetics breeding a red to a merle? I know merle x merle can result in some huge problems. I don’t know if red can carry the merle gene. Just trying to provide information.

Preliminarily exams and clearances can occur before 24 months. And it’s also safe and encouraged to breed Aussies at 18-24 months, both mine are past the minimum (as per other Aussie breeders and my vet)
Most tricolor can be bred to a Merle (as long as you ensure that Tri is not a cryptic Merle) aspens parents as well were both tricolor as well, one black, one red. Both Aspen and Remy carry the RF gene which gives them the ability to pass on red or red Merle. We also ensured Aspen wasn’t a Cryptic Merle before considering any stud options. Together the have the capability to produce any color Aussie and more importantly, their conformation complements each other beautifully!

I love Aussies. I had one of those “too much white” pups in a litter one time. I just couldn’t bring myself to kill her. A friend said she’d take her, pup was ok but mostly deaf. She could either hear a little or she learned to read lips. Her one and only trick was GRIN. She wrinkled up her lips in a toothy grin and everyone loved her. But those puppies don’t always have a happy life.

Genetic testing wasn’t available way back when the dinosaurs roamed. LOL
I’m glad you are being so responsible and dedicated to making sure your puppies will be the best they can be.
