    choosing a breed... Help?

You really need to figure out what your needs are. Do you want just meat, or pelts too? Are you doing for just food or food, fun, & make a little money? We started out with meat rabbits just for our family. (Californians and NZ) but the more I do it, the more fun I am having with experimenting...

Need fur? Storm & wet kits....

Whatever you do, don't try to use stuffing or batting. Learned that the hard way. The bunnies pushed their heads through it but because it is fiberous, it just made little nooses. Not good. Fortunately, I found them before they got it so tight it was choking them.

Just a thought, please read if you're discouraged!

Good point. I was so discouraged at one time, I gave up all together. Now that I've gotten a little experience, it isn't as hard as I was making it out to be. Given the proper housing, feed, & nesting box, and some time, those bunnies will breed like crazy. Most of my problems before were...

    Need help

Put it back, she will still care for it. She will not move it or put it back. Ants can and will kill babies. You can use diatomaceous earth to control them without harming the rabbits. Make sure you get the kind that doesn't have poisons mixed with it. They best place to get it is at...

Babies not thriving but surviving at 2 weeks

OK, I got them on calf manna now. I'm keeping the momma separated from all the babies except the two smallest. I put her back with them all night and once during the middle of the day just for a few minutes. She is nursing them without being depleted. The babies are eating the calf manna too...

Babies not thriving but surviving at 2 weeks

We have a litter of 7 babies that are 2 weeks old. They are not nearly as big and healthy as they should be. Their tummies are never round and plump but they are rather skinny all the time but they are surviving. They seem to just not be getting enough. Their fur is not soft and shinny like...

I am having the hardest time locating Standard Rex rabbits in the north Texas area. I found tons of mini-rexes but not the standard rex.

Should i put the babies back in the nest box?

I put mine back in if they don't look as though they could get in by them selves easily. better safe than sorry. It doesn't take long to go from needing a boost to jumping in and out.

How many does is a good size herd for produce a lot of meat? I have 10 kids so we go through a lot of meat. I've currently got 3 producing does and 2 more "in waiting" that aren't quite old enough. My goal is to get about 8 does producing meat rabbits for personal use and 2 or 3 producing for...

    no babies for us.....

I think who ever coined that phrase, never had rabbits. I thought it would never happen for us either. We seemed to have the worst luck with rabbits and reproducing them. I gave up for a few years and then got back into them. It's been going much better this time.

Back in the rabbit business...New - 3 more buns - pics pg 4

Cute. We have roosters name Gibbs and Tony and Feather head chicken named abby. "Gibbs" is a turken with a high-n-tight and "Tony" struts around all cocky but doesn't impress the ladies so much. "Abby" has black legs so she is rather "goth". Maybe I should continue the theme with my bunnies. I...

    My Rabbit colony experience

I was considering something like that. Right now, i have most of them in cages until I get the colony altered. I had 2 litters born within 4 days of each other. One momma was in a cage throughout the pgcy the other momma was in the colony. 5 in one litter, 7 in the other. Similar sized mommas...

We found a good bottom for a rabbit tractor

I forgot to add, it wouldn't be cost effective to buy new chain link. At least not for us. But my husband works at a metal recycling place and people bring in rolls of chain link a lot. They avoid crushing it because it doesn't crush or bale well. They usually throw it to the side and they...

We found a good bottom for a rabbit tractor

We are transitioning from one large colony to smaller colonies. In the mean time, I had a doe that was due to kindle any day and didn't want her to kindle in the burrow in the big colony and make me have to postpone the move. We had to throw together a cage because all of our cages were...

    My Rabbit colony experience

I have had my rabbits in a colony for over a year. I know I am new here (newly registered anyway, but a long time addicted reader) but since so many people keep asking about rabbit colonies, I thought I would post my experience. First the facts: I raise meat rabbits for our family to eat, not...
