I don't think he realizes WHAT we're getting ourselves into. We bought two lovely pregnant does - a sanaan and a togg (breed to the same boer buck) and got three buck kids. De wants to breed these bucks to their non-mother. To me, it seems like a big pain to go to all that trouble- separating...
Hey I'm in Maine! Tell me where the barley is!!!:D lol We're outside of Bangor in dairy country (near Dover-Foxcroft) I'll ask around. My step-dad is a dairy farmer down the road.
We've read about sprouting and want to do that for the goats and chickens!! We like to sprout for...
Same here, we're trying to wean our buckling that's 9 weeks. I was only separating him at night, but now I've started to separate him at around 1:00 in the afternoon and milk mama at night as well as in the morning. Right now he gets her between 7am and 1 pm, so hopefully eventually she'll...
I just noticed some on the kids just the other day. :/ I got some Python Dust from tractor supply for $6. I heard it works well. We shall see. Going to give them all a good shave now that it's warming up. Also, putting lyme down between cleanings is suppose to help.
My children collect branches of pine needles- the goats and their kids absolutely love it. When I go walking on our dirt road I collect a bunch on the way home. It's a natural dewormer, too. :P
Is the udder bag still pretty hard after milking or should it be loose?? The teats are loose and saggy once we've emptied her best we could (massaging her and bumping) , but how can you tell if she's holding back?? She can hear the babies Screaming for her "Maaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!":/
Also, I want...
Thanks for sharing. Was just watching a youtube video on it. Looks super easy to make. Think my neighbor makes this and adds lots of garlic and chives. It's so good! Another reason I got goats.
At six weeks I am separating mom and kid at night and letting him back with mom after early milking. Then I separate him again around 1:pm to get her evening milk at 6:30ish. I get another quart that way. I let them stay together for a couple hours before we put the kids together in a stall...
I guess we are concerned more about fresh poop in the veggie garden instead of aged manure.
Do you have a separate poop pile and a separate waste hay pile? (I know some poop ends up in the hay anyway)
This is our first spring with the goats and we know they waste a lot of hay. :D We have some big waste hills already and I just cleaned out the stalls from the winter. Yuck!
How do you use your waste or poopy hay in your veg garden?? Do you turn it into compost first? How long does that...
I gotcha, so since giving him an antitoxin he's safe to receive the Tetanus toxoid because it won't be effective for another 14 more days.
He hasn't had any CD yet so I'm good to go.
My Storey's guide book read nothing about waiting if scurs grow in, just to reburn. I should have looked for...
A couple of weeks ago I gave our buckling the tetanus antitoxin post disbudding just to be safe. I can still do the CD&T vacc correct?? We just had to redo his disbudding yesterday it's a little raw looking. :( We're concerned about infection. Should I give him the CD&T today and booster...
We took our buckling to a large dairy farm to get the lil guy disbudded. The man has dehorned hundreds of calves and a few goats. ?? Anyway, horns are back like pointy nubs.
Any suggestions? We recently picked up a disbudder and kid box. He's 4 weeks and I just gave him a tetanus two...
