Wow, I am surprised! I wean at 6 weeks of age, always have with no problems. Yet many owners and breeders are constantly telling me to wait until 8 - sometimes even 10-12 weeks of age!
First of all, I think you should wait to wean the first litter! Four weeks is too young to get all the nutrients they need. I'd wait at least another week to START weaning. And, like the previous post stated, I agree that a doe shouldn't be bred unless in optimum condition. My does never...

I feed my Minis 1/4 cup daily plus hay, but that's all they really eat anyway. They are on a super healthy pellet, so obviously they aren't as enthusiastic as most:rolleyes:
If you feed alfalfa pellets, you must feed grass hays. But, sources such as Oxbow actually make timothy based pellets, which then it would be fine to feed alfalfa. My sources are mostly from talking to breeders and judges, so I cant post a link.
Mine get a mix of Timothy, Orchard, Oat, and Meadow grass hays. But any of these alone works just fine. Alfalfa is too high in protein and calcium, and should not be given. I am glad to see someone on the forum that feeds unlimited hay. Keep up the great work!:celebrate
