What does "in heat" look like?

New to goats, have an older doe and a younger one, how do you know they are in heat? How long do you have to get them to the buck or should they actually be living with him? I don't have a buck and don't want to get one so any advice on the logistics would be helpful. Thanks.

Shaved my first goat today - Shame on you all for not warning me...

I see.....hmmm, think I'll stick to brushing. My goat is a Pygora so if I wanted to use her hair (is it called hair, or something else?) for actually spinning, it's better for it to be brushed out I think? And my ND doeling is just so beautiful, I don't think I'd want her shaved. Also, she...

Doe lying down on the job

Hi all, these are my first goats, I have a Pygora doe in milk, and I am holding her for my ND doeling to nurse. Not bad at first, but then she began to lay down while the baby was trying to nurse. The doeling is 41/2 weeks old, so not much longer to go, but it's getting very hard to hold the...

If you can diaper chickens, I don't see why not goats.

    winter milking?

I'm getting so many ideas lurking around here. I was worrying that my shed, which is now a chicken coop, but am moving all my chickens into one coop so it will now be the goat house, at least it will when I get goats, would be too small, but now I think I can just bring them to the garage to...

    Rough day....Doodle update, page 7

I too am sorry to hear of your troubles. It's always something isn't it ? I am a newbie, don't even have goats yet, but maybe very soon. I don't know what CL is? Something bad I'd guess. I have never heard of removing an udder, is that possible? So, that doe would never produce milk again...

Pics of INSIDE OF GOAT BARN

Thank you for posting the pics, I'm learning a lot. The keyhole feeders mentioned, I had to go back and really look, they are in the hay manger? which is the large wooden open topped thing, so the hay goes in at the top and the goats eat it out from the openings? Why do you do it that way...

    kidding pen design

I think I see how this works, are the brackets specifically for this purpose, can you get them at the hardware store? The end without the rebar is where you swing the piece of ply back and forth as a door? So, the doe goes in there when she is ready to kid, is it just to keep them isolated? I...

    Lifestock Guardians???.......donkey questions?

I have no answers but am interested to see what experienced goaters do. I am thinking of doing the same thing, getting goats but not keeping them right on my house property, they would be a half mile away in the back 40. Do llamas make good guard animals, never heard of that before, how does...

Interested in getting a goat (or two)!

I'm in the same place as OP, want goats, not sure what kind to get. Saw a very cute female Nigerian Dwarf on Kijiji for $150, but have no idea if that is a good price or not. (I'm in Nova Scotia, Canada) I want milk, so will have to get a Mama, but do you get one that has had a baby, or one...
