I don’t have any ewes that will stand up to him. Maybe one of the Shetlands ewes will smack him if I bring him near her babies, but other than that, they either freak out or ignore him. I need to get a prong collar for him and work on him being calmer around lambs this spring.
He’s actually...
Being rude (on her side, I mean) is never the proper response, but I can also understand the anxiety over a delay in getting promised registration papers. I bought a new ram a few years ago. He wasn’t registered at the time, but the breeder assured me that they’d be sent out that week. Over 2...
Math may not be my strength, but I was able to quickly see that $33.99x2 was less than 2 for $74.30. 🤣 I also had a little left on a gift card so I got them for even less. And I got free overnight shipping. I ordered Wednesday evening and they arrived by 0900 on Thursday.
These can send motion or sound alerts, I have that turned off because otherwise I’d be getting 1,000 a day as the sheep move around.
I think I looked at the Blink cameras, but the price point on the Wyze V3 and the fact that it pans and tilts (via the app) won out.
I work 2nd shift so I can...
Barn cameras are amazing. That’s all I wanted for 20 years during lambing season in cold VT and this will be my 2nd year with them. I only had 2 last year and while they were great, there were still a few blind spots. I bought 2 more this year and installed them this afternoon. 3 are inside the...
They are unregistered, regular size Highlands. We are very “anti-mini” over here. 🤣
They are using a young bull, but he has sired a bunch of calves for them, including this cow’s previous calf, without any issues.
The vet told them that this is only her 2nd time seeing this in 13 years.
It’s been dumping rain for a few days so everything is a muddy mess. Yesterday, I scraped the poop mud out from in front barn door out into the paddock so the ewes will stop dragging so much mess into the barn. I gave them fresh straw too, but I’m sure they’ve eaten it all by now. Feeders full...
She should tighten up pretty quickly with normal lamb shenanigans. It’s not unusual for lambs, especially large lambs, to be born like that.
A booster of selenium wouldn’t hurt anything.
Sore mouth (orf) is a virus. There’s no treatment, it just has to run its course. It is in the environment and most new babies will get it. It’s not usually a problem, but sometimes the sores on the lips make the lamb extra uncomfortable and they don’t eat well for a bit.
You know you can eat wool breeds too, right?
Despite popular advertising, they taste the same as the hair breeds. The only wool sheep that I have any recollection of tasting “strong” was a 7yo Romney ram, but it still tasted good.
If your only goal with the wool sheep is to use their wool...
Something to bear in mind, the hair from your hair sheep can potentially ruin your wool sheep fleeces. It can be worked around if you are processing the wool yourself, but it could be an issue if you are trying to sell raw wool.
In the barn. We are supposed to be back to high 40s next week.
I wouldn’t have an issue lambing in this weeks temps though. The barn stays warm and we used lamb in much colder temps in VT.
I’ve worn Muck boots for years. My first pairs lasted forever despite constant use/abuse. The newer ones don’t last nearly as long. I had to replace a pair I’d only worn for a 2-3 years. My current pair has made it almost 4 years and are doing ok, but they’re kept inside and I really only wear...
I rescanned the 3 questionable ewes this afternoon. Isla scanned positive and the other 2 are still scanning as open.
One of them, Jura, did not breed last year. She’s a weird, jumpy sheep. I’ve only kept her as long as I have because she’s my only gray ewe out on my only girl Minnie. Jura’s...
I was cranky yesterday morning that I HAD to wear my heavy Carhartt coat to do chores at 8 degrees 😬. The zipper died on my usual jacket (it’s actually just the outer windbreaker shell part of the jacket that I wear over a sweatshirt) the day before. I get too hot once I start moving.
He’ll be 2 in March so really he’s still a baby.
He’s got a lot of good in him that generally outweighs the bad/juvenile/obnoxious. He stays in fences (he’ll climb over a feeder though), he loves people, and he is very attached to his sheep.
I think his chasing problem is because he’s the...
