    Bought a scythe!

Thank you! We can use the good luck! No it was the October fires in 2017 in Sonoma County - we lost both our home and the little cottage we rented out in the first night chaos. No firefighters anywhere around... Luckily the coop, barn and a study remained unharmed. My chickens somehow survived...

    Bought a scythe!

Thank you for the tip! I have my heart set on babydolls - I really like their small size and robustness, plus they are just so stinkin cute! It’s a breed they use in the vineyards here, so I know they do well with the climate here... We will likely just have three of them, so shearing won’t be...

    Bought a scythe!

Yes, I have emailed with her. She has a waiting list of 200 for 70-80 lambs! I will apply, maybe we‘re lucky... Maybe I‘ll even end up with one out of your ewes - how fun!

    Bought a scythe!

Yes, the sharpening is the tricky part. I finally learned to hone properly when I watched some videos of Alpine farmers. And I got a couple of really good whetstones from One Scythe Connection - that made a huge difference, having good stones! Eventually I even figured out the peening (hammering...

PS, you can also look on You Tube for videos - go for the Swiss and Austrians, they know what they‘re doing! :)

    Bought a scythe!

I would love to, but am so swamped with rebuilding after the fire on top of everything else! Like I said above, One Scythe Revolution is a great place to learn. You can get an outfit made to your measurements at Scythe Connection. I highly recommend the Tops „Heidi“ blade for a wide range of...

    Bought a scythe!

Ha! I wish! No, I am in the wine country in CA, Sonoma County... I can answer questions though. A great site is „one scythe revolution“ - lots of info, videos, shop, and Botan is always ready to answer questions.

    Bought a scythe!

Yes, this particular blade in the picture is a fantastic all around grass and weed blade. Inhave cut anything from fine tough short grasses, to lush dense grasses, juicy weeds, tall radishes and thistles to mature grasses with it. It will cut periwinkle and small saplings too. The harder the...

Is this a wild bunny? Is it still alive? Have you done anything with the wounds?

Possible head-tilt in rabbit, off balance, need opinions

I, too, think it can be an infection of sorts. Definitely take him to the vet. I adopted a rabbit from a shelter years ago, who came to me with snuffles (grrr) and at some point developed an infection causing head tilt (hers was not severe) and balance issues. We put her on antibiotics and she...

    1 kit alone

So sorry, Gary, that is rough. Maybe for the next try, get a really good book on raising rabbits (there has to be one - anyone have any suggestions? maybe just look on Amazon) and read up on what to do in case of trouble so you can offer your doe optimal consitions for doing it right and are...

    1 kit alone

No, it won’t last all day, you’ll have to refill it every few hours. Just using hot water from the sink is fine, no need for microwaving the whole thing.

    Pedilyte for scours

    2019, Waiting on lambs!

I am really enjoying this thread. Read all of this and the one from 2016. I was just looking for something on babydoll sheep... I will be looking for a few in a year or so, when we have rebuilt our home we lost in the 2017 wildfires - to help us mow. Until then, I can just read about them...

Why am I losing ducks with my LGD on duty?

She is very new at her new home and might just need to learn the ropes and bond to the animals you want her to protect, that might take a little while - also at 2 years old she is barely old enough to be a serious and trustworthy LGD. In the case of the rabbit - maybe she thought he belonged? It...

What you didn't know -Share to help others

Pine shavings are much better than straw for keeping odors down. Not sure they are safe to use for goats, but switching to shavings would be a huge improvement.

What you didn't know -Share to help others

Since you‘re stuck and the goats are affected - can you clean out and then try deep bedding? Also add lots of Sweet PDZ. That Should definitely help.

    Quick question about LGD breeds

I really enjoy reading about the LGD personality. It reminds me of our beardie we had when I was a kid. She would not react to commands in a stern voice. You had to be nice for her to listen. When you called her to come to you on a walk she would always check to see what the problem/reason was...
