Newbie question: what does it mean?

I think I'm probably more confused than when I began, but it's OK because we're raising for meet, have no plans to show, and just want good healthy stock. Maybe there is someplace that has all of this, but what's the meaning of the following terms: Commercial Fullblood Purebred And if we're...

Newbie question: what does it mean?

I see ads for goats for that include a percentage. For example, just saw one that reads "50% ABGA Paint Doe" I understand the last two words refer to the goats coloring, and ABGA to the Boer association. But what does the percentage refer to? I originally thought it would indicate the % of Boer...

    Lighting as a predator deterrent?

We're on three acres, but the way things are laid out the goats, two Boer bottle babies, will be in a pen that's 75' x 50'. I've been told that's too small for one LGD, never mind two. I'm building the shelter now and making it so I can close the goats in at night.

    Lighting as a predator deterrent?

Getting ready for our bottle babies to arrive in Nov., I'm building their shelter, to be known as either Chateau de Chevon or Casa de Cabras. I'll run electric to the structure for the interior, but I'm wondering if a motion-activated exterior light would deter night time predators. What about...

    Electric fence options

Yeah, I had to double check how to spell joule, never mind understand what it is. I know NOTHING about electric fencing. Planned to go to the big feed/hardware store in Eugene (Coastal) and get something off the shelf. I'll have about 250' for the goats and another 250' if I make the top course...

    Electric fence options

We're getting ready for our first goats, two bottle babies that will arrive in November. The pen is done, 4' high Red Brand field fence for sheep and goats, 4" squares. We'll eventually get a LGD, but not until the kids are a little older. In the meantime I'm planning on an electric fence inside...

    LGD for a newbie

New to this thread and new to goats, with two Boer bottle babies coming in Nov. or Dec.for that will be meat. If all goes well this time around we'll probably get one or two breeding does and raise our own kids in the future. I've got the pen built @ 75'x45', and the shelter will be built next...

    Oregon newbie

Yeah, I'll pass on naming her. She's got a good rep locally (small community) and has been very gracious with her time. Sure wouldn't want her to get flamed on my account.

She said there are almost always bottle babies from first time moms who can't care for triplets, or are having a problem of some kind. (She has a pretty large herd of Boers.) IIRC, She tests every 6 months or whenever a new goat enters the herd, which is rare. We saw her setup and were impressed...

    Oregon newbie

We'll start with just these two and butcher them but we're leaving open the option of breeding. That's why I made such a big pen and will build a shelter bigger than necessary. She's graciously making us a deal on the bottle babies and gets a lot more for breeding stock, so we'll see what...

    Oregon newbie

A year ago we retired to 3 acres west of Eugene, north of Elmira. An infestation of Engraver Beetles meant we had to have about 80 large Douglas Fir trees removed (sad) and we've decided to use some of the cleared area for meat goats. In mid-Nov. we'll get two bottle babies from a local Boer...
