Something else to consider: Nubians are noisy. We don't have neighbours but the noise was enough to drive us mad. It wasn't bleating, it was constant full-on screaming for no reason. We ended up selling the screamer.
AI tends to be more practical for large scale operations as the set-up costs are so high. The actual semen cost is relatively low, probably $20-30 per straw. The actual apparatus required is where the expense lies. I think a conservative estimate for equipment would be $2000-2500, with vet/AI...
Depending on your pasture, you might not want to drink the milk she's producing. Certain plants can give the milk a foul taste. This is why large dairy farms dry lot their cows and provide all feed.
Yes there are guys who will help..for a small fee. You might post an ad on Craigslist looking for help. Someone with some Black Mouth Curs could certainly help ;)
My mare has a puncture wound on her neck. She's been turned out for the past couple of weeks, and it was only noticed yesterday morning. It was swollen and full of pus so my FIL cut it open a little to let it drain. We've been giving her penicillin daily, cleaning the wound out and packing it...
I would not choose the Toggenburgs. They have a tendency towards goaty tasting milk, and are usually more of a cheese-making dairy goat. I have no experience with Oberhaslis.
We have Saanens/Sables, and i'm very happy with them. They make a lot of great tasting milk. We usually get 2-3...
I believe pasteurized milk also lacks the enzymes present in raw milk. Ruminants have to have healthy stomach bacteria to survive, and antibiotics kill many of these good bacteria. Some Probios might make all the difference, if it's not too late.
I don't think it's uncommon for horses to act completely differently in different homes. I don't think the previous owners of our mare lied to us about her, she didn't have much expected of her and was happy with things the way they were. Now she has an attitude about having to work, rather...
Powdered milk (for humans) is absolutely not ok for calves, that is why they got skinny. Cattle have poor respiratory systems, and usually get infections when they are under the weather. Feed them right and they won't be underweight or suffer from pneumonia.
The box of powdered milk from our...
Only in a horse under 5yrs old. If you ride a senior horse with two hands you will receive a 20 point penalty EACH time you do it. With each event being scored out of 100, that doesn't leave much room for error. If you ride a senior horse in a snaffle you will be disqualified.
Our filly is a lunatic when it comes to fly spray. She is extremely quiet until the fly spray appears. I tried spraying her brushes and brushing it on her, to no avail. She'd smell it and panic. Even the sight of a Bronco bottle will freak her out. I'd stick with her until she stopped...
We've used the 200 but not the 400 or 500.
The best feed i've found to date is Ultium. We feed it to my 2yr old filly as the others tend to bully her off the feed, and it is incredible. Her coat is beautiful, she puts on weight just looking at it, and she doesn't get 'silly'.
We've given up...
