Update, They both did just fine, not a peep out of them (no crying). Vet came out and castrated them, they were to old to band, been a week sense the vet and both are eating good and doing great.
Hi all,
I am picking up 2 calves that are Angus/Galloway cross. 4.5 and 3.5 mo old bulls. The people are moving and need to get them out of there. They are on the cow now so I don't think they will take a bottle. both eating hay and grain. Any tips for weaning and how long before I call the vet...
The Ford 1700 is 25 HP. The front loader will lift about 1000 lbs. They are ok for smoothing out piles of gravel or clearing brush but a front bucket will not do much digging. If you want to dig a pool or deep greenhouse I would say get a backhoe. I had a backhoe, did all the ground work on 30...
Have the farrowed yet? By the picts it don't look like they have started bagging up yet. When the teats start filling up with colostrum/milk you know time is short. What were they bred to, looks like it might have been a larger breed boar.
DE will work. Diatanatous Earth (sp) Just sprinkle some all over and on the bedding and the flees will die. I have used it for dogs also. Totally safe.
I dry feed because it is easier than wet feeding. Also in the winter wet would freeze up. The water tanks have heaters in them and are right by the feed trough. I do feed wet to very small pigs, grain with goats milk.
Also I want to add, the 9 that are 5.5 months old range it weight from about 175 to 275 lbs. The runt is still the runt.:idunno Ill try and get some picts.
At 4.5 months he was 150 lbs. about 1 inch back fat, very lean bacon. Half the pig is in the brine with one ham and the other bacon. Made 25 lbs. summer sausage which will go in the smoker tomorrow. Pork chops and the tenderloins.
I planted 5lbs of mangle seeds this summer but the deer got to...
Today is the day! I am going to start butchering today. There are a total of 11 pigs to butcher. 8 of them were born on May 17, and 3 on June 11. The 3 are uncut boars as I was waiting to see witch one I would keep for my new breeder boar. Only 1 boar to start.
A yellowjacket can sting and keep on stinging. We were camping and the DW got stung inside the lip when she took a bite of a chicken leg without looking at it. WOW! what a scream!
I put a turkey in the brine to day, first one of this years flock, will put in the smoker on Friday for a test run. Saturday I am going to butcher a 100 lb pig to smoke on the next Saturday for a friends birthday bash that they have every year.
As one who raises pigs, I like higher pork prices at the grocery store.:celebrate:hide With winter coming in the U.S. its a wait and see what might happen.
In my goat shed I put down pallets and put plywood on top of them. My ground is wet October through June. You could also dig a ditch and fill it with large gravel for drainage.
Here are two of my latest projects. A smoker/grill and a 3 ton grain bin.
Testing the smoker, inside rack is 4' by 6' with a side burner so you can cold smoke. It held 100 deg. for 4 hrs. on 4 little chunks of maple.
All it needs is a paint job and a new tire. And some MEAT in it!
