Putting meat in the freezer is always a good thing. Can you castrate the boys? It is not all cuddles and hugs. It is getting someone to sit down, hold the goat upside down with his boy parts towards you. Cut the bottom of the sack off, pull the testicles out, toss to waiting dog. I spray the wound with Hydrogen peroxide and set the (I raise lambs) down. he runs to momma, suckles and may walk funny for a couple of days, then is fine. if you buy dairy does and breed them to a meat buck, you will have meatier babies=more meat for the freezer. I love me some lamb tacos, lamb lasagna, lamb pot pie, lamb chili, lamb bone soup, lamb pretty much anything.

yeah, get the goats. Have them bred, milk them, make kiefer, cheese, you can put milk in a zip lock baggie and freeze it too.

I'd only ever heard of banding bucklings. I didn't realize you could just cut them. So they don't need to be stitched up after that?

Just remember that goats are browsers, not grazers.....so, they nibble here and there.....just like deer....and not a grazer as sheep are....the reason that I say this is, my dad thought in his mind that they would be like little "lawn-mowers" and keep the yard mowed and they would eat where ever I pointed........I'm not saying that ya might be thinking in that fashion, but there could be others that do.....this is the man that chased the chickens up at 3pm....just so he could watch a sports game on tv....uninterrupted.....;).....ya should check with your local feed & seed stores as to what grows in your area and is used by the majority for their animals.....if ya have a garden they can eat the ends of carrots or other plants .....just be sure ya check on the list of don't have plants because they are toxic to goats, so some research in the local situation can help alot....even tho it may seem small....managing what ya have is vital to support the health of a small herd.....unless ya just have to feed grain, they can survive on hay, browse, and supplemented diet.....hope ya stick around and start a "journal".....I would be interested in watching things "blossom" for ya.....we use to walk our goats, so it was a very interesting situation all without fencing.....there were 3 of them, a doe and 2 wethers....they would walk with us and follow us, but we had to keep a lead on the doe....:)

No, leave it open to drain, in a few days they are healing up. I cut my ram lambs young, from a few weeks old to a couple of months old. I have never banded. Cutting is quick, it's over and they heal up quickly. I cannot compare, because I have never banded. All I need is a shape knife. Oh, I wash the testicle sack before Dr NoNuts operates. LOL

I can just imagine asking my husband to help with this job.

How long did it take before you became experienced with this? Did you ever mess up? Were you nervous the first time?

Well, looks like goats are a no-go for another year in a row, dang it.

It never fails. As soon as I get serious about getting goats something happens to keep us from it. In this case, the second job my husband currently has won't be hiring him back on for spring or summer term. Not sure about fall or next winter. sigh. I guess there's just not enough interest in night classes for college students. That means I have to take the boring, RESPONSIBLE path and help save money for things like house repairs and whatnot rather than spending extra money on goats every month.

So my plan is to set aside "x" amount of money from my current babysitting gig every month and use that to get goats NEXT year.

Dang you, Murphy!
