I was thinking about making a drop spindle and getting some roving from a friend of mine for some practice. Is it really difficult to learn? It looks easy, but professionals make just about everything look easy :p Also, is romney roving a good wool to start with? Thanks, D.o. G....

learn to spin on a drop spindle is not hard, but, like most things, it takes a lot of practice to get really good at it.....it's called a "drop" spindle for a reason :) When you are first learning it will end up on the floor a lot. Romney wool is excellent to learn on! Have fun!

I spin on a drop spindle too.

I have a Louet and a "something" that I ordered from Amazon (it was SUPPOSED to be another Louet) that is small and light and I can spin super-fine wool on it.

I started last May and have been really pleased with my progress. Plus when I was spinning wool in the barns during fair week, it attracted a lot of attention.

For my fiber animals, I have an Angora doe, a Jacob's sheep ram and whatever fiber my meat sheep friends decide to unload on me. Not that I complain ;) I like Polypay fleece and since they are a dual purpose breed, I'm thinking about getting a few. Don't really like Suffolk, although I have A LOT of it, but it is good to learn on.

my DD(13 years old) and myself are just starting to learn. We currently have 2 French Angora rabbits that we get fiber from and we picked up a bag of mixed fiber when we got the drop spindle. Just have to figure out the next step once we have the fiber on the spindle- the person we purchased the spindle and fiber from gave us a crash course in how it all works :)

Drop spindle spinning isn't hard at all, especially if you take your time. It does take a lot of practice to get it to come out smoothly and evenly though. I've been learning how for several months now, and when I compare what I started with to what I can do now, it's almost embarrassing.

I do! I have angora rabbits and also spin the fur from my Caucasian shepherd. His fur is dense, soft, and has a lovely crimp and spring like wool, so it is ridiculously easy to spin. I am planning to try out some alpaca from my friend soon, and my grandma bought me a beautiful art batt of wool, yak, angora, and silk blended that I can't wait to try.

Here is Dax, my chief fiber producer. He's six months old.
