We put up a hummingbird feeder one fall. A female showed up, landed and sipped sugar water all day. She was so weak that she could barely hang on, and rocked side to side. Next morning, still there. She stayed there 3 days before she was strong enough to fly up on a tree branch. Then a couple of days flying down to feed, then back to her tree branch. This was followed by defending “her” feeder and gave us lots of laughs. When fully rested and fed, she flew away.

Hummingbirds migrate. In south east Missouri they get the hummingbird migration. I was sitting on a porch there this fall and we estimated close to 50 hummingbirds at that house. There is a bout six houses with feeders and they are all full. They will fight like mad with each other. They are only there for a week or so then they are gone. They come spring and fall.

In California I had 3 feeders hanging from the porch overhang. Oneyear we must have had over 20 of the tiny things fighting for onershi of the feeders an esting in the large elm. They like the top branches that are too slender to suoport any weight like cats, squirrels, or larger birds. We didn't know that they were nesting up there until they starting dropping red/pink stuff on the patio. LOL When the feeders got empty they would dive bomb anyone coming out of the house until a full one went up. LOL
