Done with morning drop off and sitting down with my first cuppa. Beautiful sunny Chicago morning, finally up in the 20s. Such a nice change from single digits and below zero windchill.

Oh no! I’m so sorry your chickens are in the hands of a stupid idiot. I know you are worried and can’t wait to get home to them. I think you should deduct the price of the laying hen from whatever you are paying this girl, when you get home. And let her know that she was irresponsible. Tell her mother ahead of time, I’m sure she would agree.

Well, she is just a kid. Not old enough to drive, so her mother brings her, and helps her. The fault really lays with myself for not having made sure she understood the training. The last time she sat, I had some issues with the timing that she was coming and the feeders being empty down to dust when I got home. So this time I addressed those issues and gave her a second chance. I don’t think I will give her a third chance though.

I was quite angry. I wanted to stomp my feet and yell at her. But I have no choice but to try to work kindly with her and her mother and hope they can improve their management for the time I have left. My 24 year old son is at home. He hates chicken chores, which is why I hire someone else instead of him. If the situation got too bad for me to stand, I could probably convince him to take over and then I could fire the girl. But for now I am trying to be encouraging and supportive to the young person.

So anyway, I had her keep them locked up for a couple days and then free range them yesterday. And reiterated to them not to try to do lockup before dark. It sounds like lockup went as it should last night.

However, yesterday afternoon my son texted and said he looked out the window just in time to see a fox run off with a chicken. :barnieSo now I have told her to keep them locked up for the rest of the days. But I have one coop that cannot be locked up. It has an auto pop door that goes to a run that I did not get finished before my trip. (Again, my fault.) So I have 5 more days that I will be on pins and needles, because I’m sure the fox will be back.

I know some of y’all probably have a random chicken or 2 running around. Have y’all been feeding purina or purina owned brands? Because I was and I got no eggs and then I switched and I’m getting tons. Apparently there is some crazy theories out there but have y’all had a problem?
First, this is not about you but the "internet (mis)informed" generally.

Do people REALLY think that a feed manufacturer would modify their product to keep the hens from laying? How would that be a good business plan? What ever happened to the "smell test"?

Straight up - TOUGH ****! He lives there, he is an adult, he can feed and water the chickens while you are away. It isn't like you are asking for 8 hours of hard labor every day.

I don't spend 1/2 hour a day on the chickens. Go out in the morning, open the barn, add water, put out feed, rake the coop, check for eggs. Go out about 3 PM, feed again, check for eggs. Back out as it starts to get dark, explain to the girls that think they should sleep on the alpaca stand that they need to go in the coop. Count beaks, check for eggs, lock up. It isn't that much work.

Doing taxes, ughh🤢 Took some time to update the index on my journal. Reading thru thread was a good reminder of where all the money went and fun we've had. Only part I kinda regret is the chicken debacle. Spent WAY too much money on coop and don't even have chickens now.
Starting this journal to document progress of our ranch from 12.9 acres of raw land to a productive business. The name comes from family heraldry of Griffin with a wooded property. Ranch because we will focus on livestock and orchard.

Well the 2 brands smell different. I want to say purina is more sour but they both have this weird chicken feed smell. I’m not sure at this point I’m just happy my girls are feeling better. Who knows it would have just been a slip up of something small. I mean they produce so many bags in a day.

How much coffee is considered dangerous?
Rough sleepless night.
Forgot that I SHOULD'VE gotten fuel yesterday - coasted in on fumes this AM
BUSY day ahead - last day of January month end close
SQUASHED my silly boy-cat Marvin under the recliner last night, so everytime I got up for pain patches last night I searched the house to find him and be sure he was still ok. He finally got tired of being drug out from his various sleeping places and came to sleep on the foot of my bed.
32 trucks waiting to get in this AM... onto a muddy, rain soaked landfill... which is going to make EVERYONE's morning long.... thinking of that, I probably aught to go ahead and order 3 more 10,000lb tow straps
BUT!!!! The rain has passed and we should see some sun today!!! YEAH!!!

Coffee consumed -- awake but not enthused. 🥴 Just not wanting to go to work! But jobs to get done. Stay home sounds better. Always hard to get back into the grind after a couple months of very few jobs. :idunno:he

Better get moving along.....so I pay the feed bill. 😁😁

Coffee is ready. I slept until 5! But I didn’t get up until almost 7, just dozed.

ITS NOT RAINING!

Still very muddy, but going to be sunny today and start drying up. Because it’s not raining, Cooper and his girls are sleeping around the hay bale, on the mound of dropped hay. Ground is a little higher, an island in a sea of mud. Don’t see dogs or other sheep yet. They all are still bedded down. It’s been exhausting, they can sleep late too.

It’s 36F with high today of 56F. Going to be a good day.

Apologies for the lack of clarity. The "smell test" is an idiom, not meant literally. It generically means "An informal method for determining whether something is authentic, credible, or ethical, by using one's common sense or sense of propriety."
so now I'm wondering if phrases similar to " Huum.. smells like trouble " meaning that something seems sketchy is related to The Smell Test
