Gotta remember that chickens (those that free range) are fantastic at insect, slug and snail control.
I lost four apple trees to grasshoppers when I started out. I worked with a guy who pestered me for a year to get chickens. One of the best decisions I ever made. One of the things I most regret was not having him and his wife out to visit more. Enjoy your friendships they can sometimes fall victim to the “gotta moves”.

While everyone else's chickens were done laying eggs these ducks kept going, I have yet to advertise based on amount of eggs a day, the 3 customers we have are hard enough and we got those customers through word of mouth at the USDA where the wife works.
These free range too and put themselves away, all I have to do is close a door, but feed them first thing in the morning and second time during the day is subjective.
We had grasshopper invasion and is expected again this year, these ducks were laying belly up stuffed with grasshoppers last summer.

Good morning all, coffees ready. I always have chickens $ ahead or not. I have thought about getting a bunch of game hens for their broodiness and extremely good free range abilities. I've seen some of the bad grasshopper years and think, boy I have a lot in my yard. Then I go to the neighbors and the have 4X what I do. I've thought about getting ducks for slug control and to just watch play in the mud hole. I don't want to build a duck pen in the pasture, or at all really.

I got coffee ready! Today I’ll set a new bale of hay, let the ewes and lambs on the front field with Buford, wash clothes, take a stab at straightening up and packs some clothes for the weekend. Baby chicks are warm in their tubs on the porch and they will have Carson as their protector. Carson was in the house until bedtime last night. I let him out and checked on the chicks. I’m pretty sure I heard a raccoon churring in the clearcut next to the house. Those demons must have super sonic ears and smell. But obviously with a big black dog on the porch, that raccoon went elsewhere.

…Fen forced me up again… no. Not really. He tried but I was holding out and winning then suddenly had to pee 🫤

After he ate, he did a little happy hiney dance for me, which used to be our little ritual but Boone doesn’t allow it. We must fight to save our traditions! So he performed a small one and then insisted on being let out.

I painstakingly explained that if I let him out, I was not jumping back up to let him in again.
I let him ponder the consequences and implications and repeated myself to make sure he was certain of his decision. He walked to the door, which I can now lock to keep him on whatever side he is on, and I opened it for him. (Which I hate doing, there is a reason I train my dogs to open and close doors…)
I crawled back to the couch and snuggled in, finding a semi comfortable position when he started rattling the door to be allowed back inside. (This time with Boone in tow)

I swear. Sometimes I think he just doesn’t understand simple English! 😬
