Baby developed scours on Sunday night. Vet did a fecal on Monday - found ONE cocci, She still put her on albon, and told me to put her back on goats milk.
So - three days of Albon and goats milk - still has scours.
Could it really have been the cow's milk? She was only getting a 25/75 mix and had been on it for 5 days when the scours started.
I really need to get her on cow's milk. Should I wait til the scours clear up and try again?
Okay, first the vet should not be putting her on a medication to treat a single cocci egg. All animals have coccidia in them at all times and it is only when there is an overgrowth that treatment is needed.
There are other causes of scours (bacterial growth for instance) or eating too much at once. While she is transitioned slowly to cow's milk, she may have a touch of softer poos, but you are making the change gradually to help prevent full on scours. I would give her a bit of revitalyte perhaps if you notice her starting to get lose stools, but there is no reason she can't be on whole cow's milk.
Edited because I am still thinking on this.
If the scours had anything to do with cocci, the Albon would have stopped it by now. Does she have a fever at all? How much is she eating and how often?
No CD&T yet. We've had three trips to the vet in three weeks.
Is it safe to give her the vaccine with everything else going on?
Green - like pea soup green. It reminds me of baby food peas.
Her temp was a little high at the Vet on Monday, but I have not taken it since.
Right now it's been only three hours since her last bottle and she's acting hungry. I haven't increased her feedings because I thought that might make things worse.
I swear raising my human kid was MUCH easier than this!
I would love another member's opinion here on what I am thinking so hoping someone else will jump in...
I would give the CD&T and I am wondering if an anti-toxin might be in order as well.
I am thinking she may have bacterial scours and the only medication I ever used when we had that was something called SMZ-TMP and the vet prescribed it after I asked for it upon the advice of someone here (it is a sulfa for coccidia and an antibiotic). It worked very fast and after dealing with some very sick goats for weeks, I was so very relieved. I don't know that your vet will be keen on you telling her what you want for this goat so I am wondering if another person might have a medication suggestion.
Also, you might PM a mod and ask this to be moved to the ER section.
