This will be our second year kidding and last year the ambilical cord was not done so great. I need to brushen up. We had a sick kid and the vet had to come and took care of it for me. Would like to get it better and would like to hear from "regular goat people" who do this often. Thanks!

tie in two places with dental floss, and cut between. Dip the end in iodine or betadine.

Or use a cord clamp and cut.

we never cut the cord. the pulling and breaking that occurs naturally allows all the extra blood to go to the kid before breaking, and then seals the cord, thus preventing infection. dipping the navel is a good precaution however.

I don't tie the cord either. When the kid is delivered, if the cord is too long (after it's already broken naturally), I will take my thumb and forefinger rubbing back and forth and "cut" the cord shorter. Then they are dipped in iodine

I don't bother with cutting the cords. I've never had one be so long it would drag or cause any problems, and they almost always break close enough to the bodies. They shrivel up pretty quickly, and I dip them in iodine usually 2 or 3 times in the first day or two.

I only cut them if they are touching the ground. Other than that I just dip in iodine and let them dry up.
