I wanted to take a look at this but it said "Page not found" :/

It's pretty ridiculous what people get upset over... Selling products made of dog hair illegal?? Wow... just wow..... And I'll stop there.

Edited to say: I found another site that was helpful. http://business.ftc.gov/documents/alt006-fur-mation-alert-how-comply-fur-products-labeling-act

Or you can just google Dog and Cat Protection Act of 2000 and I'm sure there'll be plenty of sources. ;)

I think there's some confusion about the terms used in the law. It's not illegal to sell products made with dog or cat hair. It's illegal to sell products made with dog or cat *fur*, which is defined in the law.

http://www.ftc.gov/os/statutes/textile/fedreg/001228-fur.htm

And in case that link goes away, here's the pertinent parts:

Sec. 301.1 Terms defined.

(6) The term cat fur means the pelt or skin of any animal of the species Felis catus.
(7) The term dog fur means the pelt or skin of any animal of the species Canis familiaris.
(8) The term dog or cat fur product means any item of merchandise which consists, or is composed in whole or in part, of any dog fur, cat fur, or both.

The Dog and Cat Protection Act of 2000, Pub. L. 106-476, prohibits importing, exporting, manufacturing, selling, advertising, transporting, or distributing any dog or cat fur product. (then it goes on to describe penalties...)

So 'fur', in this law, doesn't mean just their hair, it means PELT. It's perfectly fine to make and sell stuff out of dog or cat hair that you've combed out, clipped off, gathered after they shed, etc....

There's even a word some people use for dog hair - Chiengora (it has a wiki page). From 'chien' (french for dog), and 'angora'. I don't know if there's a comparable term for cat hair.

There is even a book out, honest, called "Knitting with Dog Hair." It is good to know that once cleaned that the dog hair doesn't smell doggy.

Then, after do shear the pup you can trim the cat!

And then if you are still in the mood, why not craft your own pooch out of the left over doggy hair?
