Every winter I tell myself that I’ll work on de cluttering my basement with all the extra indoor time I have, right? I usually work on it once or twice, but then the winter flies by and it just doesn’t get prioritized. Well this year we made a resolution to work on it a little bit every weekend. So far so good! This was the first weekend of 2024, and yesterday we streamlined all our Christmas decorations as we put them away.

We’ve been weeding some of this stuff out over the last few years, so that made it a little easier. Yesterday we were able to condense what was left from 9 boxes down to only 6!

He built the shelves to fit the boxes, so the empty ones are still in place. We will use them when we reorganize the rest of the basement.

Next week we will tackle the opposite side of that storage room:View attachment 103747
If I was that organized I would do cartwheels.....that looks fantastic compared to my stuff....

That storage/utility room is on his half of the basement. I drive him batty. Let’s just say I won’t be taking “before” pictures of my half of the basement! My half of the garage, either. I park outside because my half of the garage is filled with piles of chicken equipment that I need to clean and organize. But I know (mostly) where everything is, and I can dig it out when I need it.:gig

Our double garage in Livingston was full of my scrounged used lumber and lumber rejects bought at reduced price at Lowe’s. BJ griped at me because we couldn’t get a truck in either side. I hauled it all to Lindale and put it where? In the brand new double carport I had put up of course!

When we used most of it to build the horse barn, he thought I was brilliant. LOL

We could trade pics of our basements and you would feel that yours is wonderful compared to mine.

Ok, so it’s been 3 weeks and 3 weekends. We’ve diligently worked on this room each weekend like we agreed on. A few hours at a time. The before and after may not look a whole lot different, but I can tell you, large amounts of items have been donated and thrown away. Some of what’s left on these shelves are empty boxes being saved to put their original content back in when it’s time for us to move. Some of those empty boxes were stacked in the other part of the basement. Now they fit on the shelves, and it makes a dent in the mess on the other side.

Here is a during picture, illustrating why it takes so much time to weed through all the storage:

Easier to get to the crawl space access, that’s for sure!

It looks deceptively bare, because the table saw and other equipment that goes on the floor in that corner have temporarily been moved out. We have to have the HVAC people come in and take a look at some rusty bolts on the geothermal system. There must be some kind of leak.

But it’s still a work in progress because things will be rearranged more when I weed through all my stuff in the other half and try to properly organize what things I decide to keep.
