A doe of mine was perfectly fine up until a few weeks ago.
During that bitter cold snap a few weeks ago, she stayed back in the barn while the others went out to eat hay. When I went to check on her, she had a runny nose and was just not herself. The next day, she was hiding in the basement of the barn, alone, and had difficulty walking. I treated for Pneumonia and she was back to herself in a few days.
Since then, though, she has looked horribly thin. I de-wormed with ivomec once, and again a week later.
I have been giving her some extra treats lately, including some oat, PB, and jelly sandwiches and other high calorie treats. I have also given her a yearly dose of Co-vexin 8, a copper bolus, Vit E and Selenium, as well as Tums for calcium...she loves those! I put out a protein pail, too, and have seen her in it.
She does have an injury to her front hoof; one toe had been ripped mostly off and is in the process of growing back. She still limps, but has no issue walking from the barn to the hay, water, and feed. I see her at the bale lying down most often, which I figure is due to her hoof hurting.
Another thing that may be causing her thin frame could be the fact that she still has a kid nursing on her from her freshening last Feb. It is not even her kid! She is just super mom and lets any kid nurse. I tried taping up her teats to no avail. Other goats ripped off the tape!
I'm just puzzled as to why she looks so bad as compared to the rest. Do you think it's the cold, plus the nursing? I just hope I'm not missing anything because she's my best doe and a dream milker.
Any tips to help gain weight? And do you think there's anything I'm missing?
