Forgive me if this is the wrong section... But What is the best guardian for goats? The lady I got a couple of my goats from has a dog, it's not a Great Pyrenees but looks close to it. Are those the best dogs for the job or can the guardian be any breed?

Any help with this would be great.

Thanks

Gretchen

Some other breeds will work as a guardian, but those breeds on that site are known for 'bonding' w/ the animals....which is essential for a truly good guardian. And....you can't use anything w/ a strong prey drive.

Does anyone have a guardian llama? I'm looking into one and want to know real stories of success or failure. Thanks!

We had one, he did a great job with the goats BUT...he wouldn't protect against raccoons and opossums.
Let them come right into the henhouse and murder all they wanted, because chickens / poultry aren't part of the 'herd'.
Also, he couldn't be in 2 places at once. When a neighbors' dog got in, he was torn between protecting the goats and the lone sheep who didn't run in the barn.
I tried keeping a llama w/ a guardian puppy...but the llama tried to kill the pup. No amount of acclimating was going to help, he saw BLOOD when he saw the pup.
I prefer 2 dogs.

I have a guard llama in with my alpacas. She is definitely doing her job but I have been lucky and nothing has come into the pasture yet. But she is always on alert and you can tell when she thinks something is amiss.

I have an akbash female guardian dog. She is fabulous, although loud at night as she barks when coyotes are nearby. She has lived with our goats since she came to live with us at 6 weeks. She comes out of the goat pasture only for vet checks and LOVES people. If she could fit in my lap, she would climb right up!
