Hi there,

Just migrated over from the chicken side (new project). I'm "fledgling" over there.

I bought three well-bred Dexter heifers back in 2005. Still have those girls plus two of their heifers and just bought a young Dexter bull in January. Just starting up my own herd still. It does take a lot initially, doesn't it?

I raised some Char/Angus crosses on my Virginia farm (while in the Navy). While in college, I worked on cattle ranches back home in Colorado. I also learned a lot working for a cow vet and on a dairy. Great way to pay for college!

Anyway, the Navy took me east and love brought me to Florida. Hubby is very supportive of my cattle endeavors. He likes steak! :D

Here's some pictures of our little herd. They get a little extra feed from buckets so I can get a good look at them every day. They do LOVE their buckets and line up according to rank.

Our bull, Randy (hubby names the boys!)

Sweet Tara, our only dun cow so far.

We debated about that but finally let them keep their horns to fend off potential predators. Their horns really deter the two-legged kind well!

Our next bull will be dehorned, though. Why give a bull any sort of edge? :/

Farmer Kitty,

I had to share this story with you. We live on a fairly busy road. This happened last year before we bought our bull:

Yes, my little Dexters have horns. I figure we're close enough to town to make people think twice about going in their field that way. Two black cows, one dun cow, two black heifers.

Well, this guy was pulled over with a flat by one of the pastures and I was working in the woods where I wasn't visible from the road. The conversation between this guy (who sounded like a real pain-in-the-***, know-it-all type) and his friend was priceless. We'll call the first guy "PITA" and the second "Friend".

PITA: Ya' see those cattle?

Friend: Yeah.

PITA: What do they look like to you?

Friend: I dunno, Angus?

PITA: No man, those are them Spanish fighting bulls. You know the ones they use in bull rings. Man they'll tear you up if you go in there!

Friend: Wow!
