Loving the herd life
Since I already received such nice and helpful suggestions, I guess I should put up a quick introduction.
I'm Ashley, my husband is active duty Army, and we have 4 children that live with us, and 1 on the way - my husband has 3 more children from a previous marriage. Ages range from 18 down to 5 right now. We have two dogs, a German Shepherd and an Australian Cattle Dog (blue), and a really obnoxious cat. We also have 5 bunnies as of this morning, 3 adults (2 bucks and a doe) and the two newborns.
I grew up in Arizona on a horse ranch, so I'm really familiar with horses and barrel racing. I also raised Holland Lops for 4H/FFA. I was raised around cattle, but never did much except help the neighbors herd them and helped my friend with washing her Brangus for the county fair.
We're about to move from southwest TX to Oklahoma this winter, and are looking for our first place to buy. We definitely need the space. I want dairy goats (probably Nubians, I like them), chickens, quail, and more space for the bunnies. We are still debating on whether or not to get pigs or feeder calves, but definitely going to start with the smaller livestock. I don't have a lot of experience with goats, other than we had a Nigerian dwarf buck when I was a teenager and we named him Stinky, for the obvious reason. He was pretty cool and you could lead him with a dog collar and he rode in the back of the truck like a dog.
We aren't "preppers" but we do canning and cook everything from home. We are trying to be more self sustaining for our large family. I have a garden here but the stupid pigeons that I can't "dispatch" because I live in town have almost destroyed everything in it this year. They are flying rats!
That's about all, we're currently working out kinks with the move and having that many critters that need a place in the truck to come with! We just bought a car trailer to haul our 3rd pickup (an antique that isn't reliable to go that far) so I think I just bought my extra space!
