Brother is interested in some of my yarn for his wife, so I've dug up yarn to count & take pics of.

The darker grey has another bag, just not pictured.

In this grouping, I discovered a skein of about 900ft that I failed to count and mark. Lol.

This one feels different and is thicker than the white above, but searching for it in the forums, I found out it's the same sheep, just made a little differently.

Brother wants 1k feet of a grey, waiting on which grey...IDK what to price any of it at, though.
Ideas on pricing??

So, I asked the internet, as most do and this is the first reply so far.

"cost of fiber, plus 5 cents per yard per ply is a common pricing method"

1,000ft is 333.33 yards. Right?
So, 333.33×0.05= 16.66
16.66×3 plys= 49.99
49.99+fleece cost of about $40= 89.99
Round that sucker up, total for 1k feet is $90.

Gawd, yeah, I could never buy yarn at those prices. But it is a crap ton of work to get it there. 🤔

I could remove fleece cost, since it's Billy's & I'd always mark up his fleece's worth vs the other Babydolls.

I wonder if I should sell the white yarn. I'll never get it like that again. Those sheep were grossly overfed & overweight, causing the longer staple length & luck caused the softness of it, as they sure weren't as soft the next go around. I could see that yarn at full price because of that and because it's more consistent & the softness of it.

Guess I need to make something from it that I'll wear regularly or suck it up & sell it...

That is tough, probably gets a family discount. I found this place with Google, might give you a general price
https://fairwindsalpacas.com/alpaca-yarn.php

That's 1/3rd the cost of hand processed & spun, it looks like?

I wonder how much mill spun costs again...Might be best to send my favorite fleeces to the mill to be spun into yarn, then just add a little $ for caring for the sheep year round. Hmm.

Central va mill costs used here-
If 4# into roving is $50, then there is the $2 per pound of 250yd finished yarn fee and the $20-24 based on thickness...$72-74 or so?
Makes like, two 250yd skeins at $36-37 each, if zero is waste.

Yeah, that alpaca website must be charging less because its cleaner from the start and it's their mill & their animals. But I always heard alpaca being expensive, so that's odd that their yarn is cheaper.

And mills need at least 3" length to spin, which most Babydoll is not...ugh...

Did the math wrong. Gave brother wrong price. Which happened to be $51, and you'll see at bottom, that I wasn't all that off in the end. Lol!

Fleece fee to full yardage...not just 1k ft of it.

☆cost of fiber, plus 5 cents per yard per ply

2614 feet out of that whole fleece.
2614 feet has 871 yards.
871 yards × 0.05 cents is 43.55.
43.55 × 3 ply is 130.65
130.65 + fleece cost of 40 is $170.65.

170.65 is for all 2614 feet.

To get cost of only 1,000 feet of yarn...wtf do we do...idk...

170.65 ÷ 2614?? I think that's right.
$0.065283091 per foot.
0.065283091×1000 feet = $65.283091
Yeah?

For 1,000 feet of 3ply yarn, full price is $65.28.

Then, to discount fleece cost for 1,000ft would be...just go back to before I added it and do the math without it...lol. Having a brainfart again.

130.65÷2614=0.0499808722
$0.0499808722 × 1000 feet= $49.9808722

Which was roundabout way of finding the discount per 1k ft.
$65.283091 minus $49.9808722= $15.3022188 discount.

Total for 1,000 ft of 3ply yarn with discount is $49.98.

Omg, please tell me this math is finally right...

Edit-
Lol, looks like it took me 31 minutes to do that math. :hide

Decided to do the math for this one while my brain is, I think, working. :fl

WoolyBully/Ewenique blend, natural white w/yellow hue, soft, thin, 3 ply yarn.

☆cost of fiber, plus 5 cents per yard per ply

Two fleeces used at $30 each, $60.

5924 feet has 1974.667 yards in it.
1974.667 × 0.05cents = 98.73335
98.73335 × 3ply = 296.20005
296.20005 + 60 fleece costs = $356.20005

$356.20 total

That's an expensive sweater or blanket. Which, of course, you then add $$ for making the item...lol.
