Although it was not a good outcome, at least you gained some knowledge from the ordeal.
Most llama's we have had do not like to be handled very much. Unless raised from birth with alot of people interaction, they tend to like their "space" and to not be confined or controlled by a halter or anything.
Hope you can make something that will celebrate his time at your farm.
