I had a kid (would have been 3 weeks old tomorrow) that died on Saturday. Let me give some back story... She was out of a set of twins, she came out first, no problems. She was my "Miss Independent". Mom was always having to call to her and find her cuz she was always running off doing her own thing. Her and her brother were ALWAYS nursing it seemed like. Even more so than my other kids that were running around. She would sometimes be eating and holler in the middle of nursing. Healthy as can be. Was the strongest of my kids it seemed like.

Well, on Saturday, I was in the house and I heard a kid hollering. I went out to see what the deal was. Well, it was her brother, running around her, almost screaming in panic it seems like. I found her laying on her side, seeming like she was not able to get up. She was kicking her feet out, and her head was flailing backwards. When I ran to her, she stopped. I thought she was dead. I grabbed her and ran inside. Her mouth was cold. I plunged her body under some very warm water to get her body temp up. Got some nutridrench in her. It didn't seem like she was breathing, but my husband said he could feel a very faint pulse. So we kept on trying. She would let out a scream every so often which let us know she was still with us. We kept trying. Her mouth was getting warmer, he said heart beat became faster, but she still didn't seem to be breathing on her own. We decided to tube her. He was having a hard time getting though somewhere. He kept saying "there must be something in the way". We kept repositioning her thinking maybe it was the way she was laying there (he has tubed before and knows what he's feeling for). Well when he finally got in her stomach, she gagged. When he pulled the tube out, there was some black stuff in the last two inches of the tube. After a little while she started fading away and we lost her probably 5 or so minutes after our last attempt. It wasn't cold that day, she was perfectly fine that morning.

What the heck happened?? We had thought well, maybe she ate something she wasn't supposed to, but there's nothing in our pasture that is bad for them, they've been there for almost 3 years now, you would think they would have found something by now if there was. Or maybe she aspirated while nursing and choked, cuz she did holler while eating sometimes. But what the heck was that black stuff at the end of the tube? I've also looked up the flailing body thing, and I've seen stuff about Enterotoxemia. Well, I wouldn't think that would be it, cuz her mom was vaccinated for CDT 30 days prior to kidding. She's gone now, and it's a bummer, but it just gets me. WHAT IN THE WORLD WAS IT?! I know we could get a necropsy done, but I wanted to know if any of you guys had any idea, cuz it beats me.

how cold was it when they were born. I had a buckling die of hypothermia and he always cried, but acted normal. He got it then the vet tild us he could go outside the next day, but we kept him in until it was 40 degrees out and he got it again. He started to recover then just died the next day. He went in and out with how he appeared to be feeling. Hope you find out what happened.

We had a buckling with exact symptoms (minus the black stuff) but he was rammed in the side by and adult doe (we saw it happen). He went down, flailed his legs, arched his head back, mouth was cold, heart beat slowed, cried out on occasion. We tried to warm him, gave him banamine, tried to sternum rub to keep his heart active...nothing worked and we lost him.

I'm not saying that's what happened to your kid but it could have been one of many scenarios. Unless you get a necropsy you just can't say for certain.

I'm sorry that you lost her :hugs

Fancifran- hmm... Goat polio. I'll have to look into that. Could that be an isolated case?

Taylorm- it wasn't terribly cold the day he was born. It was maybe 50 with a breeze. And they were in the barn for the next two days before they were outside. It wasn't terribly cold. It didn't seem like hypothermia... :hu

Elevan- that might be it too... There is always a big possibility for babies to be head butted and we just didn't see it. I'm trying to remember if there were any big goats around her when I ran out there, but I can't remember. That is a big possibility though.

Thank you all for sharing your input, this makes me feel a little better. Fancifran I will have to look into the goat polio, thank you for mentioning that possibility.

The black stuff makes me think that it was meconium. Maybe he got some in his lungs and stomach and died of a systemic infection?

Blondie- isn't meconium the first poop? The tarry stuff? If so, would it be able to hang out in her system for 3 weeks until this happened with no signs prior to this?

I have had a few kids die on me with similar symptoms. I never tubed them and found black stuff but I did have necropsies done. I took them to Mississippi State University and after their analysis they concluded that my kids died as a result of being butted around. They told me that there were tears and hemorrhages of their organs and it appeared to be caused by blunt force trauma.
Once they go into the state where they can't get up and bawl out of no where, there isn't much that can be done to my knowledge. It sounds like you did some really good things to save your kid, the only thing I'd have done different is use a heating pad or electric blanket instead of the water.

Check your pastures for morning glory, I had a really nice doe find a stray vine of that and she was dead in a few days.
