My Little Hoop Coop

I got the door made, and the frame to hang it on. Frame was too wide. Oops. But to move the frame piece to the next wire over was too narrow. Eh. I’ll fix it.

I drove a staple in the top of the frame piece. It slid back to the next square.

I zip tied in place

I hung the door. I got a gap. I offset a board to close the gap and it also acts as a door stop.

I added more boards to close the gap.

I finished the back of the coop. I didn’t cut the boards to fit the curve because I’ll take this down, so it doesn’t have to be perfect.

The tarp i got is short and won’t go from hardware cloth to hardware cloth. But I have a 10’ piece of tin that will cover the gap.
Tomorrow. LOL

You found a treasure trove! Lumber! Plywood! Nice stuff!

Take that tin off the frame, wire brush it, wash it and let dry. Spray with cold galvanize or aluminum, patch the holes and it will be ready to use!

The chickens don't care about imperfections. My first hoop coop door frame was plumb and level, but I still had to add a board at the bottom to cover a gap. The door wasn't square!

I think I saw a wire brush in Ron's stuff, the type you use with a drill. Is that what I should use? I'm new to metal stuff.

I’ve done better, but I need this up ASAP and I’m not leaving it to live in the front yard.

If you use a wire wheel, be sure to use goggles to protect your eyes and a face shield if you have one. The wire wheel will do a bang up job. But use your safety equipment!

I was thinking of making a solid back to the new coop. I don't want to spend $30-40 on a sheet of T-11, but the plywood would probably deteriorate quickly in this climate. It would need some sort of protection if I did use it.

Even stained or painted, it will rot because it’s not treated plywood. It would last awhile, but eventually weather would get it. But it’s FREE and see if Lowe’s or Home Depot has some OOPS paint. I once got a 5 gallon bucket of pearl gray exterior paint. I painted the coop inside and out, heck, I even painted a bedroom!

I built a brooder/grow out pen out of an old pallet & some plywood. A GOOD coat of paint - inside & out, edges too - and it lasted YEARS just sitting out in all weather. Go for it!

edited to add: I had to search around a bit to find this. I built this in 2013 & it lasted until 2023! Not treated, just painted.

I have gotten "oops" paint at lowe's in the past also... If possible, see if there is oil based... It will take a little longer to dry, but should hold up a little longer also. Soak the paint in, couple of coats....
And, if possible, let the roof top hang over the edge of the plywood so it does not run down in the edge where it will come apart quicker... protection for the edge will at least prevent it from getting in the layers of the plywood.
