I love your 1950 appliances. Is the refrigerator a Cervel gas refrigerator? Those are crazy expensive now! Don't let anybody rain on your parade. There is always nay-sayers that would never have the motivation to do what ya'll are doing, so they tear your efforts down so they can feel better about themselves. Water off a duck's back, don't listen to them.

You will like the open floorplan and cathedral ceilings, but do understand, it does make heating and cooling more difficult. Everyone looks at sq ft when drawing out their plan, but you also have to consider cubic feet contained within the living spaces. Front 1/2 of my home is taken up by 'the great room' which is comprised of kitchen, dining room, and living room. 17' from finished floor to where the roof pitch begins--that, is a LOT of cubic feet of air that has to be moved around, cooled or heated.
I have those all real wood ceilings in my home (built 2009) but to be honest, I don't even look at them much anymore.
Keep this in mind--a home is just a box to keep the weather out, and you will never see any more of it at one time than the specific wall, floor or ceiling you happen to be looking at in any given time frame. Kinda messy, but you get the idea. Area in upper right is upstairs bedroom--no partition wall, it's the only room upstairs and measures 16'x35'. This is a farmhouse--lots of real wood thru out, tho no hardwood floors. We're old, so they just wasn't worth the extra work and expense to me.

Good luck with yours, didn't think the builders would ever finish ours and I was sure glad to make that last payment and move in.

Yes we have considered that. We are forgoing central heat and air right now, we will have ventless ac/heaters in each room at first and a wood burning stove in the living room. After we get house completely finished we will save up and install the central air & heat. Only 1 of our 4 kids lives with us full time. 2 are there every other weekend so we will just close their bedroom doors when they are gone. The 4th child is grown so doesn't live with us ever.

We are going 12 foot wall in that main open area then the ceiling pitch, but it won't be terribly tall. No upstairs to deal with. Thanks for the advice, and I love yours!

It's a gas stove but electric fridge. I believe they are both Westinghouse, I'll have to look.

Thank you.... our biggest thing is finding animals we can use for resources. I want a milk cow too, but hubby doesn't like fresh milk (not sure why, it's my favorite!) but want to make cheese, butter and soap as well. Do you use your sheep for food or anything else?

Here's a Big BAMA Howdy coming your way! Congratulations on your adventure into the four legged critters. I don't know much about raising cows, but we are raising ADGA Reg. Nigerian Dwarf Dairy Goats. I just LOVE my babies. they have the sweetest personalities. Cuteness overload!!!This breed of goat is for milk and their butterfat is 6-10%. You know what that means, excellent milk & cheese. We milk our goats for our personal use for cheese, soapmaking & milk to drink & bake with. oh man, it makes the best biscuits. Our girls are due to start kidding in jan. 2016, so I'm super excited to start milking again; this time it's be 5 does to milk. I've been milking only 2. As you can tell my herd grew. I am a Goat-A-Holic. The cure is to have more goats.We do testing on ours seeing how we do drink their milk otherwise my husband wouldn't drink it either. But they've been tested for CAE,CL,Johne's & Q-Fever. We send it to a clinic there in Texas. Ok, well if there is anything I can help ya'll with just drop by my site & leave a message.
