Orher than warning light for engine continually blinking, and an alarming looking trianle with a car in it followed by bacon warning me there was no traction :hide the drive was fairly uneventful. We stopped at the 30 mile mark, then the 3 hr mark, another 3 hour mark at a rest stop, all at Boone’s request. He handled it well, spending most of the time in his crate, occasional putting his front end on the console to see where we were going. At each stop, we took relief, and Boone enjoyed a 5-10 minute sniffari to help him stay relaxed, and we would continue on. The vehicle was running rough when idling the entire trip. Halfway down I-80 just as we left the last rest stop, we got caught up in a snarl of about 200 cars fully stopped on highway due to a bad accident. They closed the road and we were there for an hour and a half. I needed ear buds to hear the driving directions because my hearing is so poor, I can hear the phone or radio speaking but can’t make out the words. I was worried the batteries on them would go dead, so used them sparingly until the last hour of driving. That made it a little stressful for me once we got into the Folsom area with lots of traffic. I’m not used to being in. My GPS went haywire and was taking me to weird places with dead end roads. El Dorado has a distressing lack of street signs, the ‘burb was grinding everytime I turned a corner, ran rougher than ever and felt like the whole undercarriage was going to fall off. Boone was stoic, but by the time I arrived at my cousin’s house I was vibrating like a hummingbird and could have used a stiff drink, a valium or a joint (no, I don’t, but I could have, I was that bad) I had to settle for water.
While exploring the small backyard in their mobile home park, their elderly muzzle wearing, Jack Russell attempted to decapitate Boone , who was thrilled at the possibility of playing (but of course was disappointed as Cole is now spending our visit in solitary confinement in the master bedroom) and Boone discovered what a stinky flybag is. He came around the corner with what looked like mud in his front legs, neck and chest. He reeked. They thought is was pig poop. Nope. Flybag. So Boone got the first bath of his life at 11 mo old, under protest, after an 11 hour long 7 hour drive.
I’m grateful, so very grateful the day is over

Something you hang up in a tree with an attractant that you add to the bag. It draws the insect in and they can't get out.

Bandito got into a wasp bag back in 2018. He was soooo sick all night long. I laid on the floor with him.
Do they make those for yellow jackets? We’ve got a nest in the ground.

Before we left, I had found and ordered a “human/dog bed online and had it shipped to my cousins because it wouldn’t come to the Ranch on time. Got there just before we did

so we had to sleep it on last night because no one has extra bedroom or an extra bed and I didn’t want him on anyone else’s couch. He’s allowed on ours, but only ours. Turned out to be really really comfortable! The only bad part was me trying to get up off the floor 🤪
I used the no hands leash and hooked it around my leg and we slept soundly like that.
Around 6 am the noisy garbage truck showed up. Boone sat up, listening intently, then moved over so he could see out the window, but he never made a sound. GOOD BOY!!

Tonite we went for a long walk with my cousin, all around the town center which is lovely, with a small lake, beaver pond, small quaint shops with beautiful architecture and ironwork, sycamore trees, grasses and trailing rosemary, it was so peaceful and serene and beautiful. They were lots of people with little dogs on the walkway and Boone handled it very well. It was a really great day!

Peeping Boone. He’s looking for Cole, the JRT but Cole is too aggressive and he’s old. If Boone played too rough it could injure him.

Boone supervises while my cousin makes dinner. What a work ethic!

It’s already 6:30. I had to get up for a minute and learned I’m a little more sore than yesterday morning but considering that past history says I should have been unable to get up yesterday shows it’s not too much. Will be helping my cousin make her first sourdough, but using only einkorn. It seems to have made the starter very sluggish. I haven’t been using whole grain but when I did, it didn’t get overwhelmed like this…any ideas?
We will likely leave in the next leg of the trip Wed morning as I can’t stand seeing Cole, the little JRT, confined to his room 24/7. I hate going, not knowing when I will see them again, I’m closer to Bones than anyone else in my family, save my kids and grands. He lived on the family ranch with my first husband and I, since he was in high school, then he married Tawny, went and cowboyed on a ranch in Montana, got more wild than he was as a teenager and was being a jerk. One of the old cowboys took him up to a distant line camp mid winter, where they had cows calving in zero degree weather. He threw him in the cabin with a sack lunch and a Bible, and left him there with no way back, for the weekend.
Bones, who I believe had never read a book other than “Baseball Greats” ( he was All-Star in both football and baseball ) for lack of anything else to do started reading the book of John, wound up scouring the Bible. 6 mo later he brought Tawny ( who is more of a sister to me than my sisters ever were) and his 2 boys, back to California where he worked diligently, doing 3 small pt time jobs putting himself through seminary. He’s pastored in Northern Calif ever since. His oldest son is a pastor now, in Napa Valley. Bones says they are best friends because “ rhey grew up together” 😝
Their second son is law enforcement in Oregon after serving in Afghanistan. Their youngest, who was born when his first two were graduating High School, passed away a couple years ago from a fentanyl laced pain killer someone had given him. He was also a football star, but suffered from several very painful conditions as a result of one of the worst cases of lyme disease. The last time I got to see Bones and Tawny was at Josh’s funeral.
It was so great to talk to them yesterday. One if his old High School. drinking buddies who was always in mischief with him, became a serious drug addict after doing tours in Iraq.
Recently his veins collapsed as a result of shooting up and he almost died. A few months ago, he and another if their old friends made the trip up here so Bones could baptize him in the river ❤️
It’s too short of a visit, but it’s a great visit. I need to get Boone to the coast where my older grandkids can entertain him. He’s currently woo wooing loudly, protesting that he doesn’t get to play with Cole,

Off to take Boone out for breakfast.

Those dog beds are quite comfortable!! I've been using one since the pups were born (3 weeks now). Yeah - I'm that crazy (ummm but I think you're of the same cloth ;)). And yeah --- getting up isn't that easy either - you're not alone.
This trip is exactly what you needed and it soooo warms my heart to see you enjoying life.
