Every morning for the last week or so when I let the sheep out I've noticed that the minute my ram comes out of the gate he stops, pulls his hind legs way up under him, arches his spine, and sprays his front legs/belly with urine. I know goat bucks pee on themselves during rut, but I've never heard of rams doing it before. Anyone else had rams do this?

He's just making himself smell irresistible to the 'ladies'.

As was mentioned earlier, goats do it all the time......our billy goat used to soak his beard and the smell was appalling.

Oh how lovely. And here I thought only goat owners had to deal with that particular nastiness during rut. He's been strutting around playing Great Prince of the Pasture, but Mother Nature hasn't had "The Talk" with the girls yet, so all his posturing is lost on them for the moment. :D Poor guy looks so crestfallen every time his flirting gets ignored. He's going to need therapy by the time the girls are old enough. :p

My ram lambs are all mounting each other and being a general nuisance. However, the ewes are getting 'hormonal',too. They are sniffing and lip curling when one of the other ewes pees, head butting and mounting each other like rams. Yesterday the ewes were in a field next to the two mature rams and they started to line up along the fence. As i don't want January lambs I have separated them a few fields apart as the rams really are 'woolly jumpers' and will scale the gate or hedge.

My ram is flehming when the girls pee, too. He always just looks disappointed and wanders off dejectedly, so I guess they're not quite ready yet. :) Which I'm glad about, as I don't really want January lambs either. I'll be glad when I can get another ram or a couple of wethers to keep him company so I can separate the guys and gals.

I've never seen any rams spray themselves. What I do see though is the same action, but nothing's coming out. They just get turned on. Over the past four days I've been seeing a lot with my ram getting excited and turned on by the ewes rubbing their butts up against the fence.

I have never seen my rams peeing on themselves, but my one ram does do something else on himself on occasion... when he has too much spare time and thinks about the ewes next door REALLY hard(and in detail apparently)...
