A good hand-held propane torch is great to use for sterilizing. It burns off any hair or other junk off the cage wire without having to scrub it off. Much easier on your hands. After that, a good metal scrub brush (like the kind you'd use to clean the surface of an outdoor grill) will remove most of the rust. (Make sure the "brush" part of that brush is metal, not some sort of plastic or fiber.)

After that you can take a good look at the wires and make sure they're still acceptable for use. Rust actually removes part of the wire when it forms, so you may have some areas that are too thin. But once they're clean you can tell more accurately.

thats what i was using today. kind of a pain, but it did ok. the floor wire all looks and feels very solid so i think with some more elbow grease theyll be useable.
