I have not actually witnessed her do it. But her face has been cleaned several times and it keeps getting caked back on somehow. No manure on the water or food bin or on the other two sheep she is with. I can take a picture of her whole body because you can see (on the same side where her face is hurt) there is manure caked on the hair of her neck as if she is rubbing her face and neck in it. She has plenty of pasture to roam in and her shelter is clean. Any advice is appreciated. I am completely new to this like I said and if there is something we could be doing differently please don't hold back! :) Thank you.

I truly have no ideas here...tried to research this online and nothing. You mentioned in your first post that the original owner said she'd been like this for months...this is strange and I hope you find an answer to help her!!!!

Reminds me of a picture I've seen before. I had to go back & look to see if that's what it was.

Looks like it to me...and this ewe is a hair sheep, as well. Don't think it's manure. Maybe cud? If you want I can direct you to the owner of this ewe so you can get in contact with her & find out what was done about it.

And here she is 7 months later...

yes several things could be happening here, she could being doing just like the picture of the other sheep you were sent,
spiting up cud, But remember to give the LA 200 or LA 300 if she weighs 100 lbs or more 6 cc, this will keep any infection
away. Please just clean it off best you can and let it Air dry, If she is really rubbing her face in manure, this is also sign of
healing, Just like humans your scab's itch when they heal. There is NO reason to cull her for this, in time it will go away.
Keep us posted.

Wow! I have never heard of spitting up cud before. I think you are completely right. That has got to be what the brownish green stuff is! It looks like she is rubbing her face on her side. That is so helpful. Thank you!

I just got back from cleaning her up some more to do some investigating. It seems like she has a puncture wound on her mouth where the bump is. What do you think?

I pushed on it a little but it didn't seem to bother her. Maybe it is numb and that is why she is spitting up cud when she eats?

The puncture wound makes me think there is something in there. I don't know for certain but it makes sense. Maybe that part of her mouth is numb or it is bothering her and that is why she is itching it. I do think the hair is missing in those spots because she is rubbing it off.

We have an appointment with the Vet tonight at 6. I will keep you updated.

Thank you again for all your responses. This site and all of your answers are such an valuable resource for a newcomer like me!

Hey Everyone!

So the vet recommended using an astringent (Listerine HA!) 3 times a day and just to keep an eye on it. He doesn't know what caused it but said there is no infection and that it should clear up soon. Also he said that she will stop spitting up cud when she has healed.

I will post a picture when she is better.

Thank you all for your responses. You saved her! <3

Glad all is well, or soon to be, as I said Katahdins are tuff, Timming hoofs about twice a year
and checking for parasites, which they are very resistent to as they get older, need to check
lambs more often then adults, But they are a easy breed to Raise. If anything comes up in
the future you can find us all here for you. I was at the North American show yesterday in Louisville, KY
and the Katahdins where there for the first time ever. It was great to be apart of that, they
had some great looking sheep there. I would love to see your girl (her whole body) as she
looks nice even in just the mouth pictures. Good luck and take care
