Howdy!

Who am I?
My name is Daisy. I am located in IN, by way of KY. I started building my farm 12-ish years ago. I then met this guy who made me laugh. He thought I was cute, I thought he could help during hay season, so... We got married and had our wonderful pain-n-the-xxxx / love of my life, a.k.a. my daughter. :p

What about the farm?
It is, and will probably always be, a work in progress. :D Although we have an entire list of residents on the farm, our main focuses are breeding high quality *hardy* Boer show goats (I know, "hardy show goat" seems like an oxymoron, but with proper culling it can be done!), self sustaining miniature cattle / mini Zebu for milk-meat-novelty, and occasionally working Livestock Guardian Dogs / Great Pyrenees. Other residents include LaMancha (dairy) goats, horses, ponies, mini horses, poultry, water fowl, and Juliana (tiny polka dotted pigs).

Why did I join?
I came across the forum by accident. After poking around a bit, I chose to register for a few reasons:
A) I love to help people. Getting started, I was lucky enough to have a couple mentors that selflessly babysat me... Now that I'm "all grown up" :)lol:), I try to pay it forward!
B) Sometimes even the experienced need a 'sound board' or 'think tank' (or good ol' help- but shhh, it's a secret!)... And I am always tickled to benefit from a new idea!
C) My husband, poor guy, he needs a break from 'talking farm'!

I'm not sure what to expect, as I have very little forum experience. However, I plan to be light-hearted, courteous, and enjoy the ride!

Welcome Daisy!

Sounds like you'll be a great addition. You got my attention at "mini Zebu for milk-meat-novelty" - you milk your Zebu's? I'd love to hear more about that.

Okay, I am always afraid of being taken as "snooty" when trying to be informative... I hope everyone who reads this can understand "I am in no way trying to be rude, or superior!"

Yes, we milk our zebu (with the baby left on to nurse naturally). In their native uses, they would have been multipurpose (meat, milk, and labor). They may not produce a large utter, but it "refills" quickly (or at least it should). We milk for a couple reasons... Due to some people's choice to breed with only size as a concern, some zebu struggle to provide for their youngsters (much less have any extra to fulfill their original purpose). In some cases a cow's low milk production will go unnoticed - Producing a small calf but for the wrong reasons, and compounding multiple issues. By milking our cows, it allows us to judge their capabilities / make breeding & culling decisions, and to ensure our youngsters are getting enough / growing to there full potential / reducing issues down the road with general health and calving. Plus, fresh milk is just yummy! LOL :drool

On another note:
Thank you to everyone for the warm welcome!:)
