It looks like all of the weather is finished with us but we did get almost 2" of slow rain so it all sunk in instead of running off. We also didn't get the wind that was forecast and it seems that most of that was north around Nashville and above.

Will the rain give you any regrowth? Do you have anything like rye or a "cover crop" type of cool weather crop to grow? Here wheat and rye grass will grow right up until we have real, real cold.... If the rain didn't wash the ground and new seed DS just planted (please please let it not to have washed in the field on the hill) it will come up and grow when temps are in the 30's to 50's... although it should have been planted at least 4 weeks earlier... but we won't get into why he didn't "get to it"... still, if we do not get any real hard cold weather ... low 20's .... it will continue to grow a bit and cover the field... I would like to go through and overseed some of these fields with rye before we move the cows back home for winter... giving them some better grazing here at doug's farm that was so overgrazed for years by him... taking and never putting back enough so the land got severely depleted. Just go through and drill some rye seed in where ever he can get on the ground... wheat/rye or something... not disturb the existing grass just drill right through the sod... and whatever comes up is a plus. Seed is getting more expensive, but there is some that is not too bad....

I did broadcast some rye in several paddocks that is taking pretty good but we have a cool season native grass that usually holds its own in several of our paddocks. I still haven't brought in any hay and the way it looks now, I won't need to for another month or more. As long as we don't have a prolonged period in the 20's, the native grass will keep growing and I can cut it for the sheep.
I did broadcast some rye in several paddocks that is taking pretty good but we have a cool season native grass that usually holds its own in several of our paddocks. I still haven't brought in any hay and the way it looks now, I won't need to for another month or more. As long as we don't have a prolonged period in the 20's, the native grass will keep growing and I can cut it for the sheep.

Is the native grass a type of brome?
I have a type of brome here. It doesn’t get very tall, only maybe 12 to 18 inches, but it does well all winter. I was surprised to find out that it is a brome, always thought it wouldn’t grow here due to the heat.

I really don't know and even the Extension Agent wasn't sure but it grows all winter. I am supplementing with feed now though but they do look good.

We made a Kroger run this morning and like always, we got more than needed but we did get $35 off in coupons. One thing good about Kroger is you get weekly coupons in the mail that are based on your buying history plus like this week, there was a coupon for $18 off if you spend $170 or more which isn't hard to do anymore.
We also had the HVAC guys out that installed our system a couple of years ago to do a pre-winter cleaning and check out. One of the techs raises cattle and he told us about the USDA having a program that provided some drought relief $. We haven't found out about sheep in that program but for beef it was $40 a head so it might be worth everyone checking in their area. It's obviously federal but I don't know if there are differences in regions.
