We brought in half of the ewes to check them out this afternoon and the nice weather made it a pleasure. We pulled a few fecals to check out a couple of the ewes but overall, they really look well. There was 13 sheep in this bunch and several of them were 180 pounds plus on the scale. We got caught up with ear tabs on the lambs also.

Teresa finished working the fecals that we pulled yesterday and we are both pleased with the results. One of our 5 year old ewes is borderline for worming but since she just had twins, that isn't unusual at our place. This will be the first time she has needed wormer in 2 1/2 years. The other three were clean which we were also happy to hear since one of these is Wendy that came to us from Dr Boyd stock and one of the others is Wendy's lamb Pearl.

I just realized that I have mentioned Dr. Boyd a couple of times not thinking that many would have no idea who he was. DR Boyd was a veterinarian that started trying to breed an improved Katahdin line not long after the Katahdins first became available. His sheep have a pedigree that is about as good as it gets plus they don't come with the usual problems that a lot of pedigreed stock have. An example of that is that we bought 5 ewes from one of the most reputable breeders in the southeast and we only still have two of them. The other three were taken to the auction in spite of their original but normal cost. They were problems and we didn't want them among our breeders. A good example of that is that most of the sheep that have parasite problems on farms are often sheep that weren't born there. Wendy has been here a bit over a year and she is as solid as those that we have been working with for all of the time we have been raising sheep and the plus side is, she is the first one in for a cracker. :) I think that the youth sale at the Midwest Katahdin sale is named the Dr Boyd Memorial.
