Drama Mama kidded today with twins and another doeling kid that looks to have died early. About 3 weeks ago, I thought she was in labor - she was grunting, had cow flop poo, couldn't get comfortable. That lasted about a day, then she was fine again. So, I wrote it off as something like repositioning labor. I'm thinking that is about the time the kid died in the womb.

The kid was born last. Her sack was filled with a thick liquid reddish "stuff" that had no funky smell. She had hair, but is reddish from the "stuff" in the sack. I can feel her bones, but her insides are mush. What could have caused her to die early?

The other 2 kids are very healthy and are up walking around and getting their first meal of colostrum. I'm not really upset about it since there was nothing I could I have done to save her and I have 2 healthy kids from her.

Also, would you recommend she get antibiotics?

I would hypothesize placental detachment, from trauma of some sort. The red is more than likely blood cells. Darn shame.

:( Hmm, odd. Sorry that happened though.

Maybe she was headbutted or something? I probably wouldn't give antibiotics unless you smell something bad, but since you said the fetus didn't smell I'd hold off, especially if the doe cleaned. But if you would feel more comfortable giving meds, it wouldn't hurt anything.

I agree, probably a trauma caused it but who knows for sure.

As long as she eats / acts fine, doesn't get any funky drainage, and runs no temp, I doubt I'd give antibiotics.

She just delivered the placenta and it also has no funky smell, so I'm going to hold off on giving her anything. Thanks everybody!

I *wish* all 3 could have made it, but one would probably have to be bottle raised. Nothing wrong with that, but ya know.
