I got him and his brother about 2 weeks ago and I cannot get them to get comfortable with us, I’m not sure whyWell....close up pic will help but, is the spot below where something came out of that top festering? If you squeeze it, does the exude come out whitish & thick OR greenish & gel like? Prior to this opening, was there a large bump?
So depending on what's escaping -- CL, or a puncture that's festered, or other injury. Are there more bumps/ nodules in the neck or throat area?
I do see stuff on his ears tooI got him and his brother about 2 weeks ago and I cannot get them to get comfortable with us, I’m not sure whyso I can’t squeeze it. I just noticed it today.. but I will try to get a better picture.
If it was a cow I would definitely say ring worm.... some will get bumps, some rather crusty, and such, and we will take a curry comb to clean them off, often they bleed a little... then a good iodine spray... but it doesn't do alot except to make us feel better....
It is caused by a fungus, very common in winter months ... will disappear in about 2 months of sufficient exposure to sunlight. We don't get alarmed with it in the cows anymore.. they will lose hair and get "bald looking" spots on head, neck, chest (brisket) and sometimes around the tail... they will scratch it and it will just go away about as fast as when you try to treat it. Using something to smother it, like an oil or something, will sometimes help... I have used vaseline sometimes too if the skin is red or it has bled.. and we often don't do much for the calves unless it seems to get real bad on them...
Okay. When I get back home I’ll clean it up. If it helps any they both seem very itchy lately.. they rub against the fence to itch and also use their legs to scratch themselves. I don’t see any bugs on them.. maybe I’ll be able to get a closer look today when I clean him up.I'm saying...pen it. Wear gloves and clean it off. If just skin under that crap....could be anything. If a split in the skin and hole, it's most likely CL. Clean it out, iodine & watch for more. It's contagious, watch both of them. Feel them for lumps. It's definitely been oozing & drying.
CL...caseous lymphoma
ETA--rarely would you have CL on back of ears. It likes fleshier areas. But![]()
