I am looking to test for CAE, Johnnes and a biopryn preg test. We had the vet out to draw blood on another goat earlier, so she showed me how to draw my own blood. Now I need to know what kind of vials I need for all 3 tests. Hopefully the vet can sell me just a few at a time.

I think it depends on where you are sending the tests :idunno. Like for Biotracking, I think you order their vials for their tests. Not sure though.

Use the red topped vacuum tubes for all of those tests; the lab will tell you how much blood you need. For CAE and preg. test you need 2 ml. ; not sure about Johnnes. Is the same lab doing all three tests? We use the 5 ml tubes but you can use larger ones.

I know that BioPryn does CAE and preg. test as I just had those done and I specifically asked if 2ml would cover both tests and they said "yes". I used Sage laboratories in Idaho.

I was hoping to use Rollins Lab in NC (if I can get all the info for it in time) for the Johnnes and CAE, and Biopryn for the preg test. I had the vet out yesterday to show me how to draw blood, so I was hoping to get the rest of my goats' blood drawn today to send out tomorrow. Also, does anyone (Southern??) know where to send the vials? And which form do I need to fill out?? Sorry so new at all this!!

I called a lab in Iowa that said red toppers would be fine. 2ml's for each test would be enough. Rollins was closed today. I'm hoping it will work for Rollins also!

It is best to look at their submission forms and packaging info.

You can call them and I believe they will send you the proper packaging materials needed. (Very inexpensive and I believe already properly labeled for legally shipping)

We use simple red top with no anticoagulant.
If just doing CAE and Johnes 2ml should be fine for doing both. You don't need 2 for CAE and 3 for Johnes. If you decide you want to add CL and let Rollins send it out for you, then you will need 4-6. 6 is best. :)

Personally I always aim for 6cc. Because sometimes it ends up being less and I will look at the tube and go... ah :\ well 3-4 is still enough. On 2 of my bucks their neck folds and hair and urine mixed into their hair and doing it in the dark with a flashlight... uh I ended up with only about 2cc. :\ Enough for the 2 tests but they called to let me know it wasn't enough to send those two samples out to UC Davis for the CL. All the rest were were sent out. I have a neg herd and have had a neg herd so I will just send out those two boys for updated records when I get the chance. I have several goats that are coming up in age and when they hit 8 months they will all be tested, even though their parents are all negative, I will add the 2 "missed" boys then.

here is a great chart- https://ahdc.vet.cornell.edu/docs/blood_tubes_and_labeling_guidelines.pdf

Fortunately the vet is willing to send it all off for me. So I don't have to worry about proper packaging etc...

We were successful in drawing blood tonight! No one bled to death and DH only got stabbed once.. KIDDING!!

Southern- As for the amount, I got about 4ml from each (8 from the ones we plan to have Biopryn testing), and put 4 ml in each vial. From what I understand, when they spin it, that should give 2ml of serum? Or did I do too much and only needed 2ml of whole blood to spin? Better have too much than not enough, right?

I notice the different laboratory locations. Do you know if there is a particular lab I need to send to? Or do they all do the same tests and just pick whichever would be cheapest shipping? I tried calling today, but they must have been closed for Veteran's day.

I stabbed myself in an awkward place once... thankfully I was actually wearing a bra for once! The bra got the jab!
Probably a TMI :hide but that was a funny one! :p

Your good on the serum. ;)
They only need a drop to do CAE anyway.
I'd send it to Raleigh- or again call them. I don't know if the other locations have the same capability for the type of testing you are having done.
