we use a board with a slot and break their necks. We used a pair of wire cable cutters for the bone (although now I got a pair of bone shears to use). We found it easier to cut the head off asap so it can bleed out. Then cut the feet off, and slit the hide to remove the skin. Skin with a...
I like to use a pull board. If using cervical dislocation as the method. I prefer this over the stick method because there is too much time between getting the stick in place, applying pressure and then finally killing it.
With the pull board you slide the rabbits neck in a groove and pull...
Do you do any gardening? Flower or food? The rabbit droppings are cold compost, they can be put right on the plants. And they don't smell. So lots of free fertilizer!! (pee is definatly the culprit for odors) I currently have 10 mature rabbits and 9, 8 wk old kits in an enclosed shed...
HI!
If the whining bothers you, keep him away from the bunny area. Any dog with prey drive will go after the rabbits given the opportunity. My Corsos have high prey drive, but don't bother the chickens or geese (the dogs show interest if the birds are acting flighty, but they leave them when...
I've got 6 doe, 4 bucks. I'll probably sell or process 3 of the bucks and get another (that I know is pure bred). I'll probably keep a couple young doe for more breeding once I get a new buck. In MI rabbit is going for $3.99 per processed pound.
Honestly I had my doubts about the breed when we got them. They were said to be New Zeelands and CA's. I wasn't concerned about papers for meat rabbits. Maybe once I get established I can invest in some better stock.
I'll try to get a photo of the father (mother same color) this weekend...
can anyone identify what would bring this bunny's coloring about? Mother and father were both dark brown all over (like wild rabbit brown heather only dark, almost black)
It has a distinctive lighter belly.
I'm in Michigan, and I've got a mine out in a covered lean off a shed. They are outside, with no heat etc.. and the kits feel very warm. Just keep them out of drafts. It's been about 5 degrees at night here for the past week.
Mom rabbit has packed extra fur around them a couple times, plus...
Thanks Dan, Unfortunatly I dont' have another lactating doe so it will be survival of the fittest. I'll check them more closely (it's been so cold I hate to disturb them too much).
Here's a good link for hide tanning, with a few options.

I bred my doe on the 2nd, put the doe and nest box in a larger cage @ 21 days and she started nesting at day 25, and had 12 kits day 32. (glad I...
aww congrats!
One of my NZ's just had a litter of 10 or 12... huge litter for her first I think. all are black/brown except for 2 pink ones... both parents are dark brown (heather looking).
Thats all I do right now, we have bottles though and we just swap them out in the am and pm.
Has anyone used a heated water system? I'm thinking about making one. It's got a heater and pump to keep the water moving.
Thanks for posting a photo on the tin heater, I'm going to make one for my...
just a thought.... create chanels and pen area with some plywood, make it along a fence or somewhere you can herd the rabbits into it easier, then have someone by a "gate" you can shut to keep them from escaping.
This will make it a little less stressful for the rabbits and yourself. Also...
As much as I'd like a regular building to house my rabbits, we came up with this:
We built it this last weekend, just have the roof, a door, the floor and the ends to finish (we have the lattis on the ends done).... Hopefully it'll work. We plan to build cages to get 2 rows... so it could hold...
I have New Zealand and Californians, they're all about a yr old. How much pellets should they get? Should I measure out the food, or can I just keep the bins full and let them free feed? They also get timothy hay and apple sticks.
Well, we picked up 16 rabbits total (4 bucks, 6 doe and 6 babies). I didn't like the way they were being housed so I got them all. The cages were poorly made and will need to be remade in the spring. We spent the weekend making a shelter for them. We talked him down to $200 for everything...
