@CLSranch Scrapies is a prion disease similar to Mad Cow disease (BSE). It is also potentially transmittable to humans. It is mostly gone in the US due to the USDA Scrapie Eradication Program. Part of the program, is flock ID tags so origin can be determined if a sheep is found to be infected at slaughter.
Thanks.
I don't know the state law here. I've never had sheep. I do know Equine used to have to be tested once for ____ (for the life of me I can't remember right now). Now in OK anyway it's annual testing and required for anything to leave the property. Even just riding your horse to mail box.

The scrapie number you are assigned through the program becomes yours permanently. We joined the California State scrapie program over 20 years ago when it was voluntarily. When we returned to sheep I wrote asking about rejoining. By then it was mandatory to tag any sheep leaving the property. They responded that we still were in the system with our original number, so we no need to reissue. I just pulled out the remaining tags for use. When we relocate to Texas, we will have to apply for a Texas number since the numbers are issued by the different states instead of federal.

At the auction I have been using for 20 years last year they started putting their own scrapie tags in any sheep without one. They also started requiring California State Transport Slips on sheep as well as cattle when you bring them in.

Been on the roof today. 3 guys from church came and we got all the shingles off the roof. Got one side cleaned real good and two strips of underlayment on. Got most of the other side cleaned. It took a LOT of water, coming down to sit in shade, lemonade was a big hit, but only after a cold bottle of water and cooling down. We tarped the roof and got it covered. Hot, soaking wet all day, 1 guy doesn’t work outside and he had to take a lot of breaks. I had him go in the house to cool off. There is rotten decking across the front. And some on the back. That will have to be replaced.

Hot. The heat is brutal.
