why couldn't the AAA make some effort to educate consumers that not all Angus beef is from purebred Angus cattle?
I read or was told - To be classed as angus beef it can be as low as 51% angus as long as its black ???????? Not sure if thats correct

Hey Blackhereford you wont upset anyone on here as we are all tough as old boots and to prove it - The polled hereford was created by using naturally polled Galloway :hide :hide :lau

If that is the case, that 1% makes it hard. I guess I can tell a little white lie and say that all those black & white striped, black angus calves I have running around are pure black angus burger. Just need to put a little boot blacking around the middle to send them to the processors as such. (I use my beltie bull for all first time heifers; angus, beltie or jersey)

Well, it's partly correct, at least for the Angus Source program provided by the AAA. According to the American Angus Association website, in order to be able to have your calves qualified as Angus Source (R) calves, the sire must be purebred registered Angus, and the calves must be 50% Angus to qualify as Angus Sourced calves. (http://www.angus.org/AngusSource/ProducerParticipant.pdf)

To qualify as CAB, according to CAB Grade and Brand Specifications: "USDA graders inspect black-hided cattle(typical of the Angus breed) and give it a grade. All beef considered for the brand must be the best Choice, or Prime, beef truly the top of the scale. This top-quality Angus beef is then evaluated again, using the brands set of 10 science-based specifications for marbling, size and uniformity. If its good enough to make the cut, then it earns the distinctive Certified Angus Beef brand label."

That certainly says a lot about what qualifies for a CAB label. :D

:smack 'Twas not! If they were they would be black, white-faced and really hairy. :gig :plbb

People get all hung up on breed in the consumer market. The biggest difference when it comes to beef quality isn't the color of the hide. It's the DIET and quality of the feed.
